Position Title: Science Engagement Facilitator (Seasonal) Department: Science Engagement Reports to: Science Engagement Supervisor Pay Class: Full-time Temporary FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt The expected duration of this temporary position is May 12 to September 6, 2026, when Pacific Science Center is open 7 days a week. This position will work both Saturday and Sunday, for 5 days/week. There is a possibility, but no guarantee, of extension to a regular position beyond this date if there is department need. Position Summary The Science Engagement Facilitator (SEF) contributes to Pacific Science Center’s mission to spark curiosity and fuel a passion for discovery, experimentation and critical thinking. They do this by engaging guests in personal and inspiring interactions and facilitating discussions centered on curiosity about science and science concepts throughout the physical space of the Science Center. In addition, the SEF helps to ensure smooth daily operations while providing excellent and proactive customer service. Science Engagement Facilitators embody the spirit of curiosity and real-world STEM experiences, supporting and celebrating the role of STEM in the lives of all learners, regardless of background and identity. We believe that curiosity and critical thinking are essential to equity and justice. We embrace science as a process of exploration, discovery, and problem solving that helps us better understand our universe and each other. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Welcome and proactively deliver science engagement activities to large and small groups of curious PacSci guests of all ages. Types of delivery include: Presentations that encompass a planetarium, physical stage, a laser dome, Science on a Sphere, public courtyard, and the Tropical Butterfly House. Small cart science demonstrations, one-on-one and small group interactions Out of public hours venue science engagement experiences Be aware and responsive to individual needs with excellent and compassionate customer service Learn, implement and model excellent science interpretation Staff and operate exhibit positions correctly and appropriately Improve and maintain science literacy Communicate and collaborate across teams Help guests with following policies and procedures Promptly report any malfunctions relating to exhibits and the facility Other duties as assigned Position Requirements Personal bias awareness and a desire to be an anti-racist leader Knowledge of informal learning education practices including any of free choice learning, exploratory education, and participatory museums Excellent verbal and written communication skills Excellent attention to safety Excellent customer service skills including the ability to represent Pacific Science Center’s mission and focus on guest experience Maintains a friendly and welcoming demeanor in busy as well as slow times Flexibility Ability to assist during emergency and evacuation situations Work collaboratively with a diverse set of colleagues Work a flexible schedule onsite including weekends, evenings, and holidays Ability to quickly learn and apply new science content, model science as a process while actively seeking ways to incorporate other ways of knowing in science engagement Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent required; must have contagious enthusiasm for science engagement and education and a desire to inspire and engage all ages from diverse backgrounds Personal bias awareness and a commitment to be an anti-racist leader and center indigenous knowledge This position is guest facing and a uniform is required (supplied) Preferred Astronomy content knowledge and/or Pacific Northwest geology and/or PNW ecosystems knowledge Background in science, education, communications and/or customer service Has collaborated or active relationships with local and global indigenous communities Guests visiting PacSci come from many diverse backgrounds. Proficiency in a second language such as but not limited to Spanish, Somali, Mandarin, ASL, and/or Vietnamese is a highly preferred skill to support with on floor communication Availability to work the entire summer season (May 12-Sep 7) Physical Demands & Working Conditions While performing the duties of this job, will be required to maneuver through the science center; manipulate and safely use objects, tools or controls; reach to retrieve supplies and objects; communicate with guests; respond quickly to sounds in the area; continuously able to position self or otherwise be able to adjust to a child’s height. This job will require exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, and other potential irritants or hazards common in a science center. Must be able to observe and perceive guests. This position must pivot comfortably between being public-facing working hands-on with guests in groups from 1-2 to 50 to 60 in live presentations. The noise level varies from low to moderate. This position description generally describes the principal functions of the position and the level of knowledge and skills typically required.
