Belfast City Council is seeking a skilled and dependable Scientific Officer (Landfill) to support the operations of the City and Neighbourhood Services Department. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• A full, current driving licence valid in Northern Ireland and access to a vehicle for official business.

• Conduct environmental monitoring programmes, surveys and investigations across council landfill sites, including Giant’s Park and the former Dargan Road Landfill site.
• Collect, analyse and interpret water samples (groundwater, leachate, marine), and prepare samples for external laboratory testing.
• Monitor and manage landfill gas extraction systems, ensuring safe and efficient operation in accordance with regulatory best practice.
• Download and interpret monitoring data from automated data loggers and manual measurements.
• Maintain and calibrate environmental monitoring equipment and provide technical support to other staff.
• Prepare scientific reports, maintain records, and liaise with external agencies, developers and consultants.
• Provide training and supervision to colleagues in the use of environmental monitoring tools.
• Investigate pollution complaints and contribute to environmental protection initiatives and inspections.
• Support air quality monitoring projects and participate in out-of-hours investigative and monitoring duties as required.
• Represent the Environmental Protection Manager and provide operational cover for other Scientific Officers when needed.
