JOB SUMMARY

Axol Bioscience is a dynamic, rapidly expanding human cell culture specialist developing new innovate products and solutions for the fields of drug discovery, toxicology and life sciences from their state-of-the-art sites in Midlothian and Cambridge.
We provide highly validated human iPSC-derived cells and primary cells from healthy donors and patients of specific disease backgrounds, together with optimized media and growth supplements. To support the continued growth of the organisation, we are seeking an enthusiastic Scientist to contribute to the delivery of our portfolio of service and custom projects.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of a PhD level of qualification in cell biology/life science subject or a relevant BSc/MSc with 3-5 years’ experience
  • Knowledge and practical experience of working with induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs)
  • Experience with characterisation of iPSC lines using (but not limited to) immunocytochemistry, fluorescent microscopy and flow-cytometry
  • Experience and expertise in cellular analysis techniques including flow cytometry, ELISA, imaging-based assays and homogenous plate-based assays for cellular analysis and compound screening in mammalian cell culture
  • Experience in assay development, and should be able to work independently in planning and troubleshooting assays/experiments
  • Differentiation of hiPSC lines to neuronal and other lineages for drug discovery including preparing reagents, thawing cells, media changes, passaging cultures, scale-up and cryopreservation would beneficial
  • Knowledge of reprogramming of primary cell material to iPSCs as well as with genome engineering (i.e. CRISPR) in mammalian cells but preferably in human stem cells would be desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of molecular biology techniques such as DNA, RNA and protein extraction, DNA electrophoresis, PCR, RT-qPCR
  • Experience in an industry setting is beneficial, but not essential
  • Excellent record keeping skills with a good eye for detail
  • Organisational, planning and time management skills with the ability to plan ahead whilst delivering results to deadline
  • Excellent team working and communication skills

Responsibilities
  • Work independently to plan, organise, execute, troubleshoot and deliver service projects to a high standard and in accordance with project plans
  • To contribute to ideas and help shape future project direction
  • Use previous knowledge and/or experience to identify problems and optimise processes
  • Analyse and interpret experimental data; identify and solve experimental problems
  • Prepare high quality data packages, clearly disseminating results to the relevant stakeholders
  • Report on milestone delivery and project status to the Group Leader
  • Be an effective team member in supporting service and R&D functions of the company
  • Perform daily laboratory housekeeping activities, including but not limited to cleaning of laboratories, stock control and waste disposal
  • Completion of laboratory notebooks and standard forms in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures & good documentation practice
  • Preparation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Providing weekend cover for cell culture as required on a rotational basis
  • Compliance with all Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Computer literate with specific skills in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent record keeping skills with a good eye for detail
  • Organisational, planning and time management skills with the ability to plan ahead whilst delivering results to a deadline
