Description

As a team member you will apply a range of both routine and specialised histological procedures to surgical and autopsy specimens to detect pathological features essential for diagnosis applying independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.
Develop scientific knowledge and expertise in histology through active learning by engaging in professional development activities both formal and informal. Undertake surgical cut-up, diagnostic specimen management, testing and related duties following established accredited protocols and standards in accordance with professional and ethical standards and NPAAC requirements.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated ability in a range of histological applications from routine tissue management through to the application of advanced methods and technologies including embedding, microtomy, routine special stains and advanced complex special stains, urgent frozen section protocols and specimen dissection.
  • Demonstrated high levels of attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks within a histology laboratory
  • Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation / certification.
  • Proven willingness and ability to actively participate in and contribute to continuing education and other professional development activities.
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment to achieve the goals of the work unit including the meeting of critical deadlines.
  • Availability to participate in roster system across the operating hours of the department.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a Bachelor of Science relevant to the field (or equivalent) from a recognised university or tertiary institution.
  • Candidates must be able to participate in a roster system, including overtime as required. Current Laboratory hours fall between 0530-2300 Monday to Friday and 0600-1530 Saturday and rostered on call duties.
