Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (Sr SDET)
Our fast-paced, innovative cybersecurity team, part of a larger established insurance organization, is expanding its software engineering team. We specialize in B2B and B2C SaaS products, protecting millions of customers from cyber threats. With a diverse team based in the San Francisco Bay Area, we offer a collaborative and dynamic environment. We are seeking a Senior SDET with strong software testing and automation engineering experience to join our exceptional team.
Responsibilities:
- Architecting, developing, and maintaining scalable, reusable, and system-aware automated test frameworks, focusing on integration, API, and performance testing.
- Influencing system architecture and testability by collaborating with developers to design test-friendly components and services.
- Driving long-term automation strategies, ensuring tests are effective, reliable, and scalable within a CI/CD ecosystem.
- Leveraging AI-powered tools for failure prediction, test optimization, and strategic insights.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to streamline testing processes and improve coverage and efficiency.
Functions:
Test Automation Engineering & System-Wide Validation
- Architect, develop, and maintain scalable, extensible, and robust automated test suites with a strong focus on API, integration, and performance testing.
- Engineer test automation solutions by analyzing the platform’s internal structure at the code level, not just through frontend or documentation.
- Create automation strategies before implementation, ensuring test plans align with system design and business goals.
- Proactively influence testability—work with developers to design software that is inherently testable and easy to automate.
Engineering Collaboration & Test Strategy Influence
- Work closely with developers, DevOps, and architects to analyze system architecture and define test automation strategies.
- Establish automated quality gates in CI/CD pipelines to prevent regressions and improve software delivery speed.
Metrics, Coverage Analysis, and Process Optimization
- Define and track automation effectiveness—measure test reliability, scalability, and failure patterns.
- Implement automated reporting tools to continuously monitor test coverage and test gaps at different system levels.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for failures across UI, API, database, and infrastructure layers.
- Optimize test execution time by ensuring the right balance between unit, integration, and E2E tests.
Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- 7+ years in software testing and automation engineering.
- Strong software development background—preferably a developer who transitioned into test engineering.
- Extensive experience writing automation frameworks in JavaScript.
- Background in Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD-driven environments.
- Experience with application, cloud, and network security testing is a plus.
Engineering & Test Strategy:
- Deep understanding of system architecture—can analyze code and design for testability and automation readiness.
- Experience in defining test automation strategies based on business goals, scalability, and risk analysis.
- Strong ability to influence software architecture for better testability.
Technical Expertise:
- Proficiency in API, integration, and backend testing (Postman, Rest-Assured, Supertest, Playwright).
- Hands-on experience with scalable automation frameworks (Playwright).
- Experience with middle-tier testing, including APIs interacting directly with databases and external services.
- Strong understanding of performance testing (JMeter, Gatling), security testing is plus (OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite).
