Description Position: Seasonal Outdoor Educator Status: Seasonal, Hourly, Non-Exempt Hours: Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:20am and 5:15pm Mandatory training week of June 1st-5th Summer Farm Camp runs for 9 weeks beginning June 18 – August 14, 2026 Reports to: Education Manager About Coastal Roots Farm Coastal Roots Farm (CRF) is a nonprofit Jewish community farm and education center. We cultivate healthy, connected communities by integrating sustainable agriculture, food justice, and ancient Jewish wisdom. We share organic produce with those who need it most and connect people to compelling Jewish ideas and traditions through farming and food. We distribute food through our on-site pay-what-you-can Farm Stand, pop up mobile farm stands, and donations to hunger relief organizations. We offer hands-on education and experiences through School and Group Visits, Farm Camp Farm Tours, Volunteer Opportunities, Jewish Agricultural Festivals, and other community events, inviting our neighbors to connect to the land, Jewish tradition, and each other. Coastal Roots Farm is located in Encinitas, CA on approximately 17 acres of land. Our Farm consists of vegetable production fields, education farm and gardens, a food forest, chickens, and compost operations. Coastal Roots Farm was incubated by the Leichtag Foundation in 2014 and received 501(c)(3) public charity status in 2015. Position Overview A Seasonal Educator will work variable hours per week, up to 40 hours, and will support Coastal Roots Farm’s Education Department in implementing Jewish and Farm-based educational programs during Farm Camp reaching community members of all backgrounds with a focus on TK-8th grade students. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong communication, public speaking, and group facilitation skills, interest in Jewish tradition, agriculture, and environmental stewardship, a passion for working with young people, and a welcoming disposition. They have the ability to teach these concepts to a variety of ages 4-13 years old and have experience in formal, informal, and/or outdoor learning environments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Seasonal Outdoor Educator’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Supporting the Education Department to create curriculum, facilitate educational programs, and evaluate the delivery of the Farm’s Jewish and Farm-based Farm Camp program. Is willing and enthusiastic about working within the Jewish community but may be of any (or no) faith or background. Is passionate about environmental, outdoor, Jewish, and/or agriculture-based education. Daily set up and clean-up of learning environment Joining team meetings to plan for activities Caring for campers and providing an unforgettable experience in a loving, non-judgmental environment Additional Responsibilities Attending relevant meetings. Helping with various farm-related projects. Integrating Jewish wisdom, teachings, and values to Farm Camp’s curriculum. Other duties may also be assigned by supervisor. Requirements Required Qualifications and Experiences The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. At least 1-2 years of experience with either Early Childhood, Elementary age, and/or Middle School age children. Experience designing and delivering curriculum to youth. Understanding and passionate about environmental, outdoor, Jewish, and/or agriculture-based education that may be relevant to the content of a Jewish Community Farm. Enjoys working with youth ages 4 and up and their families. Ability to build and nurture relationships with a wide variety of people including colleagues, youth, and families. Effective listening and communication skills. Team player and leader Flexible, able to work simultaneously on a wide range of projects and ability to prioritize tasks. Exceptional listening and communication skills with sensitivity to cultural communication differences. Entrepreneurial, adaptable, and creative. Cooperative, service-oriented attitude. Dedicated to the camper’s experience. Enthusiastic and Mission-aligned. Works well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment Preferred Qualifications and Experience A relevant college degree preferred or working toward obtaining one (Child Development, Environmental Studies, Agro-ecology, Jewish Studies, etc.). Teaching Credential preferred or working toward obtaining a certificate or credential in the field of education. Experience and background in Jewish settings. Experience with creative and arts-based Jewish programming (ex: singing, movement, etc.). Experience of indigenous land-based practices. Compensation $18-$22 per hour commensurate with experience. Typical Working Conditions The Seasonal Outdoor Educator will work mostly outdoors and occasionally in the office. There will be exposure to Southern California outside temperatures, chemicals used in the agricultural industry, and loud noises. Essential Physical Tasks The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs., cutting, and carrying. Able to walk a minimum of .5 miles on uneven narrow trails with elevation gain.
