Position Purpose: Reporting to the Learning & Engagement management team, Wildlife Educators work on a part-time basis to deliver a variety of programs for a variety of audiences of all ages, such as curriculum-based programs for elementary- and secondary-level students, virtual programs, weekend children’s or family programs, Parent & Tot, etc. Also included in this position are family and group evening and/or overnight programs, requiring staff to work evenings or sleep at the Zoo when scheduled for these particular shifts. Shift lengths vary depending on the program and are typically 3 – 8 hours long. May be scheduled up to 40 hours per week from September until the end of contract in June. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • University degree/College diploma in biology, education, or related field or the equivalent of Zoo education and related experience and training.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering nature-related programs to youth.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal, plant, and conservation issues.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Must be able to work well independently and in a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills / experience.
  • Bilingual in French would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with the Toronto Zoo and its wildlife / exhibits preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of WHMIS legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver specified curriculum-based programs in person or virtually, adhering to a specific program outline and components (as developed by Coordinators), using interpretive methods to engage participants of a variety of age or grade levels.
  • Set-up, preparation, and strike-down of the program space, maintaining a clean and safe learning environment.
  • As needed, under the direction of the applicable Coordinator, assist in the creation of additional teaching aids/resources or provide input for program development.
  • Coordinate details with other Zoo staff such as confirming details of behind-the-scenes tours and animal visitors for programs.
  • Liaise with group leader/teacher/parent, when group/participants arrive to discuss/finalize details of schedule for the day, and if necessary, work collaboratively with the other staff/Volunteer(s) to ensure they are informed and prepared to carry out program plans. At end of program communicates any important information to group leader/teacher/parent upon check-out.
  • Keep Supervisors and/or Coordinators informed of factors affecting execution of programs and of program successes.
  • Follow appropriate health & safety protocols. Report any hazards / concerns immediately.
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct, acting as a role model with a professional attitude and demonstrate environmentally conscious behaviour.
  • Regular cleaning of the work area to ensure it exceeds customer expectations and to ensure health & safety guidelines are adhered to, including picking up garbage, wiping high touch surfaces.
  • Manages work time appropriately, checks with Supervisors or Coordinators if job duties end early.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
