Job Title: HS ESL Teacher Job-Type: Full time Contract Days: 187 days Location: High School Reports to: Principal ABOUT WAYSIDE SCHOOLS: Wayside Schools is an open-enrollment, tuition-free Pre-K3 12th grade public charter school network that provides over 1,900 scholars across its three South Austin campuses with a rigorous International Baccalaureate education. Job Goal: This position is for an ESL Teacher. Candidate is responsible for: Classroom instruction for ESOL and ELDA for ESL students Collaborating with content-area teachers to provide support with ESL strategies, differentiation and inclusion support. Supporting ELL students at the high school level Monitoring academic progress of ELL students Maintaining ESL documentation and assist with Language Proficiency Assessment Committee (LPAC) meetings, Assisting with organizing and facilitating Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) and documentation. Qualifications/Education/Certification: • Bachelor's Degree (required) • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate (preferred) • High School English and ESL Supplement (plus) • 3-5 years Teaching Experience • Bilingual (plus) • Minimum 3+ years of teaching experience (plus) Skill Requirements: • This position requires the ability to apply knowledge of current education and instructional theories, methodologies, techniques, and principles, knowledge of subject matter, and knowledge of state, local, and federal laws and regulations affecting the lives and education of students. • Strong understanding of social and emotional needs, development and learning in a second language. • Ability to establish and maintain a positive school culture which supports the learning of all students. • Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively using a variety of media, work with others as a team, organize and maintain records, manage time and resources effectively and efficiently, and evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback. • Performance Responsibilities: • Use a variety of research-based instructional practices to meet the needs of a diverse learning community and English Language Learners. • Align the planned, taught and assessed curriculum ensuring that strong daily planning includes well developed mastery objectives and effective assessments of student learning. Provide training to teachers who need support in this area. • Regularly use data to evaluate and develop in-school and out-of-school support plans as needed to ensure ELL student success • Promote improved learning opportunities across campus by providing supplemental instruction on learning strategies instruction for students working to become proficient English speakers. • Build ELL parent relationships with the school, including encouraging ELL parent participation in campus events and information sessions • Monitor and support ELL parent access to school information such as translations of newsletters, websites, etc. • Maintain records and documentation for annual LPAC meetings, TELPAS and compliance documentation. •Perform all duties pertaining to area of expertise as required (e.g.language acquisition, vocational training, career education, etc.) • Perform language proficiency testing for all new to district ESL students • Maintain contact with staff through a variety of methods (email, phone calls, meetings.) • Maintain professional development through such activities as classes, conferences, seminars, workshops, and professional journals; provide technical guidance to less experienced teachers. • Perform various administrative activities (e.g., attend faculty and staff meetings, order equipment and supplies, copy materials, create bulletin boards, take attendance, obtain permission slips, and coordinate department activities.) • Monitor academic progress of ELL students towards graduation and support students with required documentation for higher education • Prepare lesson materials, supplies, and equipment for demonstration lessons for teachers needing support with ESL strategies (e.g., copy materials, set up audio visual equipment, arrange lab materials.) • Coordinate with campus testing coordinator to ensure language accommodations are provided on standardized testing • Maintain ELL documentation in eSTAR platform • Monitor student behavior both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., during class, in hallways between classes, and during assemblies, extracurricular activity meetings or events, fire drills, or other group activities.) • Maintain confidentiality. • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor. • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible. • Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community and solicit its’ support in realizing the school’s mission. Physical Effort and Work Environment: • Services are provided in both a pull-out and push-in setting. • Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning (e.g., standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling). • Light lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required (e.g., books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20 – 40 lbs.). • Field trips may be made. • Candidate should be willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day. • This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids. • Regular attendance is required for this position. Personal Work Relationships: • Receives administrative supervision and is typically evaluated formally one time per year. • It is expected that less experienced candidates will receive additional guidance on instructional matters and that those with more experience will serve as mentors, providing suggestions, guidance, and assistance as appropriate or necessary. • It is expected that some teachers will be more involved in planning and coordinating departmental activities. Supervisor may provide detailed instruction regarding changes in policies, procedures, or laws or in reference to unusual circumstances or problems. • Teacher has significant contact with students, parents, and other school staff to provide instruction, offer guidance, exchange information, and develop social skills of students. • Teacher may also maintain contacts within the community to enrich the content of materials and utilize additional instructional methodologies (e.g., take field trips, invite guest speakers.)
