If you are committed to professionalism, accuracy, and customer care, we would love to have you on our team! ________________________________________ Location: East Lawn , South Sacramento Mortuary As a Death Certificate Clerk, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations and providing compassionate support to families during a sensitive and important time. Your primary responsibilities will include processing death certificates, coordinating with medical professionals, and assisting with various administrative tasks, all while embodying East Lawn’s Mission Statement and Values. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: • Death Certificate Processing: Accurately complete, file, and order death certificates using the California Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS), ensuring all paperwork is timely and compliant. • Permit Refiling & Amendments: Manage and refile permits for the cemetery and process any necessary amendments. • Communication with Medical Offices: Contact hospitals, medical offices, and doctors to obtain the cause of death and secure required signatures. • Customer Support: Understand General Price List (GPL) and have the ability to relay information to customers in the absence of a funeral director or arranger. May include taking first calls and dispatching our Care Center Assistants as needed. File flag applications, contract transmittals, and complete service work. • Billing & Record Keeping: Sort mail, code invoices with appropriate expense account, and forward to accounts payable. Maintain and balance cash advance checking account and petty cash. • Reception & General Office Support: Answer phone calls, greet customers, and provide support at the reception desk as needed. • Industry Knowledge: Stay informed on changes from Coroner’s offices, health departments, and other relevant entities in the death care industry. • Other duties as required. Qualifications: We are looking for someone who is highly organized, compassionate, and efficient. To thrive in this role, you should possess: • Attention to Detail: A high level of accuracy when handling sensitive documents and information. • Communication Skills: The ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers, medical professionals, and staff. • Tech-Savvy: Experience with the CA Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS) is a plus, but on-the-job training is available. Advance skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). • Administrative Expertise: Strong organizational skills to maintain organized filing systems, handle data entry quickly and accurately, attention to detail and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. • Basic Medical Knowledge: Familiarity with medical terminology related to death certificates is a plus, but not required. • Math Skills: Comfort with basic math (add, subtract, multiple, divide) to handle invoicing, payments, and record keeping. • Team Player: While you’ll be working independently, you will also need to collaborate with other team members to ensure smooth operations. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience: Experience with CA Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS) or in the death care industry is preferred but not required. On-the-job training will be provided. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment: Standard office setting with moderate noise levels. This position is in a standard office environment with desktop business equipment and frequent telephone calls. Physical Demands: This role requires sitting for extended periods, regular use of hands and fingers on a computer, and occasional lifting ad carrying items or equipment of up to 25 lbs.
