Description Working at The Preservation Society of Newport County offers you the opportunity to work for an organization that preserves, protects, and presents 13 historic properties and landscapes in Newport, Rhode Island. As part of the team, you have an opportunity to help preserve and maintain a cultural, historical and the social treasures of Newport, Rhode Island. The Preservation Society of Newport County seeks full-time Security Guards to work a combination of weekday and weekend hours, including holidays, primarily between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE The Security Guard II is a highly skilled, observant, and conscientious member of the Properties Department. This person ensures the safety and protection of all Preservation Society properties through active patrols, rapid response, and continuous monitoring. This role provides a visible security presence, supports emergency procedures, and upholds organizational policies while delivering exceptional service to guests and staff. Guards rotate between multiple historic sites, identifying risks, resolving incidents, and maintaining accurate documentation. The position requires strong situational awareness, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm and effective in both routine and high-pressure situations. Requirements Provide comprehensive safety and security coverage for all PSNC properties, including houses, outbuildings, grounds, parking areas, and crosswalks; conduct proactive rotating patrols, drive between sites using a company vehicle, and respond promptly to radio calls, alarms, and incidents. Identify, report, and mitigate safety hazards, including slip/trip/fall risks, structural or environmental concerns, and guest-related safety issues; follow all prescribed safety and health regulations. Support all emergency response procedures, including evacuations, medical incidents, severe weather actions, and threat mitigation, ensuring guest, staff, and volunteer safety. Document all security activity, including incident and accident reports with photographic evidence, and maintain accurate shift logs detailing patrols, interactions, and observed irregularities. Professionally deescalate tense or volatile situations, maintaining calm, composure, and a solution focused approach to safeguard guests, staff, and property. Manage guest and event related security as needed, including crowd management during peak visitation or special events and assisting guests with accessibility needs or general inquiries. Coordinate with external and internal partners, serving as a liaison with contractors, law enforcement, fire officials, and emergency responders when needed. Create and manage security ID badges and access cards, ensuring proper authorization levels and secure access control for employees, volunteers, and temporary staff. Monitor and support security systems, including identifying suspicious behavior on security footage, performing basic equipment troubleshooting, and reporting malfunctions. Enforce Preservation Society policies, providing guidance and corrective action to visitors and staff to maintain safety and property standards. Serve as secondary contact for the Security Manager, including responding to calls and managing the security phone when the manager is off duty. Perform additional duties as assigned, supporting the overall mission and operational needs of the Preservation Society. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to pass a background check. CPR, First Aid, and AED certification preferred, along with prior museum security, general security/public safety and CCTV/access control experience required. Strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and ability to recognize and report safety hazards, competence in emergency response procedures. Effective communication skills, including professional radio use, public interaction, and deescalation/conflict resolution experience. Proficiency with basic technology, including computers, tablets, and security software, with the ability to produce reports and create and manage ID/access badges. Ability to work independently or as part of a team, with a strong work ethic. Flexibility in scheduling (weekends/evenings), and willingness to travel between all PSNC locations. Physical Demands: Ability to consistently arrive at work on time and ready to begin duties. Ability to stand for extended periods, usually 40-45 minutes per hour. Ability to walk quickly for extended distances under emergency circumstances. Ability to open and close large, heavy gates, sometimes weighing several tons. Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain, and move throughout historic buildings. Ability to lift and carry signs and banners, sometimes weighing as much as thirty (30) pounds. Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.
