Security Officer Location: Great Western Hospital, Swindon, SN3 6BB Salary: £14.05 per hour plus unsocial hour and weekend uplifts. Plus, Serco benefits Schedule: Full time – 37.5 hours per week based on 12‑hour shifts, 4 on 4 off. As a Security Officer in our Health team, you’ll deliver a professional, visible and responsive security service that helps create a safe environment for colleagues, patients and visitors across the hospital site. Every day, your work will support the smooth running of essential NHS services. From emergency response to conflict de‑escalation, you’ll play a vital part in creating calm, protecting people, and helping ensure the hospital remains a safe and welcoming place for the community. What you’ll do as a Security Officer You’ll be entrusted to: Deliver all duties in line with Assignment Instructions, relevant British Standards and Security Industry Authority (SIA) and Serco security codes of conduct Maintain a current SIA licence and complete all internal and external compliancy training required for this role. Act as the first line emergency response for any security situation, including staff and department panic or emergency alarms Provide a responsive security service that treats all colleagues, patients and visitors with dignity and respect Use Conflict Resolution and de‑escalation techniques to defuse challenging situations, using Physical Intervention only as a last resort Monitor CCTV systems in line with BS 7958, identifying incidents and escalating appropriately Control access to the premises, verifying identification where required and challenging unauthorised entry Assist and escort visitors and colleagues around the hospital site Respond to reports of missing patients, conducting searches both in person and via CCTV Complete, timely and accurate reports, logs and documentation as required Manage lost and found property and support cash handling duties in car parking areas Investigate fire alarms and participate as part of the Fire Response Team Act as first point of contact with external emergency services. Ensure all issued equipment and uniform is maintained and used correctly. Does this sound like you? You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have: A valid Front Line SIA Door Supervisor Licence held for a minimum of 3 years, ideally combined with a valid Public Space CCTV licence. A current First Aid qualification Significant experience as a Security Officer, ideally within corporate or healthcare settings Strong customer focus and experience working in public‑facing environments Good administration and report‑writing skill. Must be proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel and using modern technology devices for reporting. Professional use of radio and telephone communications, etiquette. Experience working in diverse and multicultural environments Confidence using de‑escalation techniques alongside sound judgement and diplomacy. (MAYBO Safer de-escalation and Clinical holds, trained would be an advantage). Experience with work with metal health patients (would be an advantage) Knowledge of the Mental Capacity / Mental Health Act (would be an advantage). This role requires BPSS clearance, which involves identity verification, employment history, and criminal record checks to meet government security standards.
