Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant - Autism

About the Role:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Teaching Assistant, with a focus on supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), to join a supportive team in Plymouth. The successful candidate will work closely with classroom teachers to provide educational support and individualised assistance to children with autism, ensuring they can access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.

Responsibilities:

  • Work one-on-one or in small groups with students on the autism spectrum, facilitating their educational and social development.
  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and personal learning goals.
  • Collaborate with the classroom teacher to adapt materials and lessons to meet the needs of students with ASD.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Use positive behaviour management strategies to maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Assist students in developing self-regulation, communication, and life skills.
  • Monitor and report on students’ progress and any concerns to the classroom teacher and/or SEND Coordinator.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, external agencies, and parents to support the well-being of students with autism.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children with ASD or other special educational needs.
  • Knowledge of autism and evidence-based practices for supporting students with ASD in educational settings.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, resilience, and a positive attitude towards working with children with special educational needs.
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
