Job Description:
We are seeking a passionate and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant to join our dedicated team at a SEMH Secondary School located in Preston, Lancashire. In this vital role, you will be responsible for supporting students with a range of special educational needs and emotional challenges, helping to create a safe and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored support to pupils with a range of SEND, including those with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and other learning difficulties.
- Assist in the delivery of personalised learning plans, under the guidance of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and subject teachers.
- Facilitate small group sessions and one-to-one support to address the individual needs of students.
- Contribute to creating a positive, secure environment conducive to students’ learning and mental wellbeing.
- Monitor and track pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to review meetings.
- Encourage students’ social and emotional development, providing strategies to help them engage effectively with peers and staff.
- Manage challenging behavior constructively, implementing the school’s behavior policy and using de-escalation techniques where necessary.
- Promote independence and self-confidence within the students, supporting their academic and personal growth.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, school counselors, and external agencies to ensure a cohesive approach to student development.
Requirements:
- Experience working as a Teaching Assistant – experience within an SEMH setting is highly desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
- A solid understanding of SEND, particularly in relation to SEMH needs.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to the well-being and educational success of children with SEND.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building rapport with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviour in a calm and effective manner.
- Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification, such as an NCFE CACHE Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent.
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo this process).
