Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a recognized accounting designation program (i.e. CA, CMA, CPA or CGA).
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the accounting field.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting software (i.e. Microsoft NAV, general ledger, accounts payable, cash management, etc.).
  • Intermediate knowledge of all aspects of financial and operational accounting, including auditing, tax research and project accounting.
  • Intermediate knowledge of fund and inter-company accounting.
  • Knowledge of audit schedules and audit working paper preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications and some knowledge of Broker Management systems.
  • The demonstrated ability to collect, compare and analyze all information and figures with great attention to detail, while using reason and logic to solve complex problems and concepts.
  • Superior time management and organizational skills as well as strong project management skills to manage competing priorities.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated ability to deal effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to communicate in French is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Accounting, you’ll be actively supporting the business by providing financial information for Individual Insurance Services, preparing financial statements, budgets, costing, analysis and reports and participating in projects to support business goals.

  • Prepares monthly financial statements, management reports, and board reporting with various analyses while supporting strategic and managerial decisions. Reviews year-end consolidation of individual insurance companies.
  • Assembles budget and forecast data for each assigned company by gathering and consolidating data from managers, analyzing historical data, identifying trends, providing rationale for budget elements, and analyzing budgets.
  • Designs, implements and maintains internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Maintains appropriate cash balances and prepares monthly cash flow projections.
  • Creates and maintains systems to provide appropriate level of costing information to management.
  • Creates and maintains all investment accounting processes including monthly and annual reporting and facilitates portfolio transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements by preparing tax returns as required for HST and corporate tax. Prepares annual Trust T3 return for OTIP, HST 111 for Broker and Benefits, not for profit returns and researches tax issues as required.
  • Maintains cost sharing system and ensures appropriate allocation of shared costs across the OTIP group of companies. Makes recommendations on transfer pricing decisions.
  • Prepares year-end audit schedules for all assigned entities and assists external auditors as required. Is the lead contact with external auditors for individual insurance companies.
  • As a senior team member provides advice and support to team members to resolve accounting issues and questions. Makes recommendations to management for process improvements.
  • Participates in corporate and finance projects in support of organizations goals.
  • Posts account transactions and maintains accounting ledgers and accounts for general ledger and sub-ledgers.
  • Reconciles statements and transactions, prepares monthly bank reconciliations and performs monthly balancing of all balance sheet accounts accompanied by a lead sheet.
  • Acts as a resource for accounts payable and other team members and reviews general ledger coding on invoices and other documents.
  • Ensures information is coded correctly to balance fund accounts through the trial balance. Approves financial accounting general ledger entries for all companies.
  • Prepares and scans files, secures financial information through regular database back-ups and follows internal accounting controls to keep financial information confidential.
  • Performs other duties within competence, as assigned.
