Job Description – Accounting Specialist (Nonprofit Focus)

ABOUT US

We are a mission-driven nonprofit organization supporting lung health across Alberta. Our small but dedicated team works collaboratively to ensure strong financial stewardship, transparency, and compliance with funder requirements.

POSITION OVERVIEW

As our financial operations grow, we are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accounting Specialist to join our team. This role will manage day-to-day accounting functions and contribute to accurate month-end, year-end, and budget reporting. The position is fully in person at our Edmonton office. It starts as part-time (20–25 hours per week) with the potential to transition into full-time as responsibilities expand.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation or in progress is an asset.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, ideally in a nonprofit organization.
  • Proficient with Sage 50 Desktop.
  • Strong experience with AP, AR, reconciliations, working papers, and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of deferred revenue, restricted funds, and grant compliance.
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, reconciliations).
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Accounts Payable: process invoices, payments, ensure proper coding, and reconcile vendor accounts.
  • Accounts Receivable: prepare invoices, record donations and grants, follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Month-end & Year-end Support: prepare reconciliations, working papers, and schedules.
  • Budgeting: assist with preparation, monitoring, and variance analysis of organizational and program budgets.
  • Deferred Revenue: track and reconcile balances in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Grant & Fund Tracking: support restricted/unrestricted fund reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records in Sage 50 Desktop.
  • Assist with audit preparation and provide required documentation.
  • Identify process improvements to strengthen financial controls and efficiency.
