Description

Job Description: Under the direction of the AVP, University Controller, the person in this position will assist with the overall general accounting with independent judgment and discretion in planning and carrying out the details of work procedures and methods. The Senior Accountant will assist in managing the University’s accounting operations, including reconciling accounts, improving processes and ensuring compliance with regulations. This position will perform daily, monthly, quarterly and year-end reconciliations which will require the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in a timely and accurate manner.

Essential Functions:

General Accounting (70%)

  • Performs daily, monthly, quarterly and annual accounting functions.
  • Assists with overall general accounting.
  • Prepares bank reconciliations for cash accounts of higher complexity and measured risk.
  • Prepares general ledger entries by maintaining records and files.
  • Prepares account reconciliation for specific balance sheet accounts and access holding accounts.
  • Maintains Aging reconciliations to the general ledger for key functions Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable in collaboration with Accounts Payable and Billing office.
  • Works with the billing department to identify and reconcile systematic discrepancies.
  • Assists with the month-end and quarterly close for the finance team.
  • Prepares Management Reports.
  • Assists with fixed asset management and reconciliation.
  • Assists with preparation of the Audit work papers.
  • Analyzes account information as needed.
  • Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.

Policy Development and Compliance (10%)

  • Oversees compliance for areas under his/her purview, and assists with development and updating of financial policies and procedures.
  • Assists in developing and implementing accounting procedures.
  • Assists in training finance members overseas.
  • Maintains financial security by following internal controls.

Finance Team Support (20%)

  • Provides support to the AVP, University Controller as needed.
  • Assists in working groups/ project implementation.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Finance Team by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business or related field required.
  • Five + years accounting experience required.
  • Great Plains or Colleague application experience preferred.
  • Experience with financial system implementations is a plus.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office, with a special emphasis on Excel and Word required.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment is essential.
  • Evening and weekend hours sometimes required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal, written, and listening communication skills.Superior attention to detail and high analytical skills.
  • Ability to multitask and follow through in a timely matter; effective organizational and time management skills. Proof of creative and flexible problem solving with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to relate well within higher education environment and to deal with a wide variety of people on various issues.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality concerning financial matters.
  • A high level of skill in accountancy, detail and computer systems and their functions in student receivables are required.
