Job Summary: Our client in the construction industry is looking for a Senior Accountant to join their team! The Senior Accountant will act as the Owner’s right hand in overseeing all aspects of construction project accounting. This role focuses on the internal gathering and analysis of financial information to ensure accurate job costing, expense allocation, and cash flow management. The successful candidate will be highly meticulous, thorough, and business-minded, with a strong understanding of construction operations and accounting principles.
This is not a traditional compliance-only role as you will be deeply involved in daily operations, helping guide financial decision-making and providing clarity around the financial health of projects and the company.
Job Type: Full-time, permanent. 100% on-site.
Job Location: Etobicoke, ON
Shift Structure: Monday to Friday; Day Shift.
Compensation Structure: 85k-100k per annum, depending on experience.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

· Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction or related industries.
· Strong knowledge of construction project accounting, job costing, and work-in-progress reporting.
· CPA designation preferred but not mandatory if the candidate has equivalent hands-on experience.
· Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage complex accounting workflows.
· Proven experience determining expense recognition, capital vs. operating expenditures, and depreciation strategies.
· Strong business acumen; able to balance accounting precision with operational realities.
· Comfortable working in a hands-on, “old-school” manner when necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work closely with ownership and operational teams.

Responsibilities

· Oversee and maintain the company’s accounting process and internal controls, with a strong focus on project-based accounting.
· Ensure accurate job costing, expense tracking, and timely financial reporting on all projects.
· Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and monthly close activities.
· Monitor cash flow and provide actionable insights to the Owner regarding project profitability and company performance.
· Determine appropriate expense recognition timing and depreciation schedules to optimize company finances.
· Collaborate with operations teams to ensure accurate capture of costs, billings, and change orders.
· Proactively identify discrepancies or irregularities and recommend corrective actions.
· Develop and refine accounting procedures, ensuring they are thorough and aligned with best practices.
· Liaise with external accountants and advisors for annual filings and tax compliance as needed.
· Act as a trusted advisor to the Owner, offering financial and business guidance.
