Description Position Summary: The Senior Accountant serves as the lead accounting professional responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of San José Clinic. This role is highly hands-on and tactical, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting the organization’s financial health. Working closely with executive leadership, the Senior Accountant will manage core accounting functions, oversee transactional processes, and provide reliable financial data to support decision-making. Key Responsibilities 1. Day-to-Day Accounting Leadership Serve as the lead for all daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll coordination Ensure timely and accurate recording of all financial transactions Maintain and oversee month-end and year-end close processes Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheets, and key financial accounts 2. Financial Reporting & Analysis Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules Manage and prepare grant-level financial reporting, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and adherence to strict reporting deadlines Provide variance analysis and explanations for leadership review Support preparation of reports for executive leadership and Board of Directors Assist in tracking organizational financial performance against budget 3. Budgeting & Financial Support Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual budget Work with department leaders to track expenses and provide financial insights Support forecasting and cash flow monitoring 4. Compliance & Internal Controls Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal policies Maintain strong internal controls over financial processes Leads external audits and financial reviews Ensure proper documentation and audit readiness 5. Process Improvement & Systems Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and workflows Support optimization of financial systems (Paylocity, Aplos software) Partner with HR and Finance leadership on payroll, benefits accounting, and reporting accuracy 6. Collaboration & Support Serve as a key liaison between Finance, HR, and operations teams Provide guidance to administrative staff involved in financial processes Support leadership with ad hoc financial analysis and special projects Requirements Qualification, Education and Experience: Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required) 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience Experience in nonprofit or healthcare environment strongly preferred Technical Skills Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices Experience with accounting systems and payroll platforms (Paylocity experience a plus) Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, and Power Query preferred) Financial analysis skills (reconciliations, reporting, and modeling) Systems & Integrations: Experience improving or implementing financial systems and workflows; ability to think in systems and demonstrate measurable outcomes from past process or system improvements Core Competencies Highly detail-oriented and organized Hands-on, tactical, and execution-focused Strong problem-solving and analytical skills Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines Strong communication skills with ability to translate financial data for non-financial leaders Physical Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, bend and stoop for (long) periods of time. Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally/ frequently. Ability to respond to emergency/crisis situations. Exposure to noise. Exposure to blood and/or fluids.
