THE OPPORTUNITY:

Are you looking for a career designing, developing and driving new technologies and shaping the future of mechanical design in the aerospace and defence sector?
If so, We have an opportunity for a Senior / Principal Additive Manufacturing Engineer to support our Mechanical and Manufacturing engineering teams within adoption of additive technologies.
This role is based in Edinburgh but will be a mixture of home based and onsite working. It will offer you the opportunity to see the cutting edge of additive technology across the UK and work with various academic and innovation partnerships.

The Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh but now with an additional location in Newcastle, is uniquely positioned as one of the world’s top designers, developers and manufacturers of radars, lasers and infrared countermeasure systems.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:

You really must have:

  • A fundamental understanding of additive technologies, particularly laser powder bed fusion.
  • An enthusiasm for learning and developing knowledge in a new technology and an aptitude for passing your learnings on to others, and a pro-active attitude to technology adoption.
  • Be a qualified Mechanical / Additive applications Engineer with proven experience in a Senior or Principal level role, where you have contributed to or led engineering activity through the design lifecycle.
  • Hold a minimum of an upper second-class Honours degree in a relevant discipline or have equivalent job-related experience.
  • Be an experienced user of 3D CAD software (PTC Creo preferred) with an appreciation of Stress and Thermal analysis, including “first pass” analyses.
  • Have a good understanding of ERP and PDM systems (Teamcenter Unified and SAP experience would be beneficial).
  • Demonstrable experience in mechanical engineering detailed design - first-hand experience of engineering design, analysis, tolerance studies (including GD&T) and generation of technical documentation and data packs.
  • Have some experience and understanding of material selection, machining and manufacturing and additive manufacturing techniques and employment of them to achieve optimal DFx approaches.
  • Be able to challenge ideas, proposed solutions and people in a constructive, positive manner.

It would be nice if you had:

  • Fundamental skills / Experience in Materials Science and Metallurgy.
  • Experience of Additive Manufacturing qualification / certification challenges in Aerospace.
Responsibilities
  • Support Engineering Design teams with selecting appropriate additive technologies, materials and Design tools like Generative Design and Topology Optimisation.
  • Perform ‘hands on’ mechanical design and development using 3D CAD software.
  • Help develop and standardize additive manufacturing designs processes and policies across the UK Electronics business.
  • Support the Mechanical Capability team and the wider Additive subject matter expert team with delivering Leonardo’s technology adoptions strategy.
  • Work closely with specialist engineering groups such as Stress and Thermal Analysis, Design Integrity and Airworthiness.
  • Identify risks, threats and opportunities in current and new products, utilising additive solutions where appropriate to improve form, fit and function.
  • Support supply chain development, and research and development activities across the UK to help Leonardo in growing AM in all areas of the business.
  • Help develop internal training and support the AM Subject Matter Expert team deliver product specific training to the wider engineering community.
  • Pro-actively engage with projects across the UK to help guide effective and efficient adoption of relevant additive technologies.
  • Support mechanical management team in process and departmental improvement and development activities.
  • Continue professional development throughout your career by formal training and keeping up to date with the latest developments, which may aid performance.
