About the Role
Reporting to the Head of Policy, the Senior Policy and Research Officer will be responsible for scoping key equal opportunity and human rights issues; gathering and critically analysing evidence related to those issues; and providing high quality, evidence-based and implementable policy advice, and recommendations to address the issues. They will play a key role in leading the Commission’s key law and policy reform agenda.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Lead the development of complex, sensitive and best practice research in relation to human rights issues, discrimination, racial and religious vilification issues and change or suppression practices, in line with strategic priorities.
  • Identify, research, and analyse emerging issues and trends involving complex equal opportunity and human rights policy issues and provide authoritative, reasoned recommendations and expert policy advice.
  • Develop quality and accessible briefs, policy documents, project plans, reports, submissions, and other materials.
  • Actively plan, monitor, and manage complex project objectives and outcomes to ensure policy projects remain within agreed budget, scope, and timeframes.
  • Proactively build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge and experience in policy and research, preferably in relation to equal opportunity and human rights issues such as reducing racism, First Nations rights, disability rights, LGBTIQA+ rights and/or other equality issues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Victoria’s key human rights laws or demonstrated ability to obtain this quickly.
  • Experience managing complex research, including designing market research methodology, facilitating focus groups, analysing, and synthesizing data and report writing.

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in law, public policy or other relevant discipline is highly desirable.
