ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Senior Associate to join our rapidly growing Sydney Environment & Planning team. As part of our nationally recognised and market leading Real Estate & Projects practice, you’ll work across a mix of litigation, transactional, and advisory matters.
Our clients include leading developers, institutional landowners, and government bodies at local, State and Commonwealth levels.
You will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of matters ranging from compulsory acquisition, planning, pollution, contaminated land, administrative law, heritage and much more.
The team has active litigation in Classes 1, 3, 4 & 5 of the Land and Environment Court of NSW, as well as the District Court of NSW and Magistrates Court of Victoria, providing a wide range of litigation experience in development appeals, compensation claims, judicial review, and environmental crime.
There is also an opportunity to expand your knowledge to other jurisdictions by working on matters originating in our Melbourne and Brisbane offices.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advising on issues under a broad range of environment and planning legislation, including the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 and the Land Acquisition (Just Terms Compensation) Act 1991.
  • Day to day conduct of litigation, primarily in the Land and Environment Court of NSW, including managing teams of experts, liaising with client and barristers and appearing at directions hearings and other interlocutory matters.
  • Advising on development applications and compliance with conditions.
  • Advising on and acting in relation to enforcement orders, prosecutions, any associated regulatory activity.
  • Reviewing and drafting contractual documents such as biodiversity offset agreements and planning agreements.
  • Advising on planning and contamination risk as part of a property or commercial transactions.
  • Supervising or undertaking research in relation to a range of topics
