The Role HDR is seeking an experienced Senior Associate Structural Engineer to join our national Building Engineering Services (BES) group. The position will be located in Sydney. This role is suited to a Senior Associate Structural Engineer operating at technical authority level, capable of leading complex structural scopes, providing independent technical review and certification and mentoring developing engineers. You will collaborate closely with discipline leads, project managers, clients and other stakeholders to deliver high‑quality, coordinated structural outcomes within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment. The position retains a strong hands‑on delivery focus while expanding into governance, leadership and business‑support responsibilities expected at Senior Associate level. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Design Delivery Lead and deliver complex structural engineering analysis and design from concept through to detailed design and construction. Independently develop complete structural design packages that meet project scope, program, safety and quality requirements. Act as a technical authority on projects, including independent technical review, certification and assurance of design outputs. Undertake advanced structural analysis and design in accordance with Australian Standards, NCC requirements and HDR design frameworks. Provide expert input into complex design challenges, constructability staging and risk mitigation. Governance, Standards & Quality Support HDR’s technical governance through rigorous application of quality systems, design checking and peer review processes. Contribute to the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates, tools and frameworks. Identify, manage and mitigate technical and safety‑in‑design risks across project lifecycles. Champion best practice in safety, compliance and sustainable design outcomes. Multidisciplinary Coordination & Client Engagement Collaborate closely with architects and other engineering disciplines to deliver fully coordinated, integrated and buildable design solutions. Build and maintain strong client relationships through trusted technical advice and consistent delivery excellence. Represent HDR as a senior technical advisor in client meetings, workshops and technical forums. Support work winning activities including tenders, proposals, fee development and technical presentations. Construction Phase & Delivery Support Provide construction‑phase services including site inspections, responses to RFIs, design clarifications and technical support. Support resolution of complex site and construction issues while safeguarding design intent, safety and compliance. Leadership, Mentoring & Capability Development Mentor and develop junior and mid‑level engineers, providing technical guidance, coaching and career support. Play an active role in technical skills development, succession planning and capability building within the structural discipline. Support recruitment activities, including technical interviews and onboarding of new staff. Foster an inclusive, collaborative and high‑performing team culture aligned with HDR values. Commercial & Business Contribution Support sector and project leads with resourcing, program planning, risk management and commercial performance. Assist with scope definition, fee management and delivery efficiency on projects. Identify opportunities for repeat work, service expansion and long‑term client relationships. Contribute to business planning initiatives and broader office and corporate activities. Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Structural Engineering. Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia. 15-20 years’ experience in structural engineering design within a consulting environment. Strong experience in building structures across sectors including data centres, commercial, industrial, health, defence, education, sports, aquatic and mixed‑use developments. Demonstrated experience leading complex structural scopes and acting as a senior technical reviewer or certifier. Advanced knowledge of Australian Standards and NCC requirements (including AS 1170 series, AS 3600, AS 4100, AS 3700, AS 2870). Experience in site inspections, construction support and multidisciplinary coordination. Capability to operate at discipline‑lead or senior technical lead level on projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills with confidence engaging clients, reviewers and senior stakeholders. Software Experience (Preferred) Structural Toolkit, SpaceGass, Strand7, ETABS, RAM, PTD, RAPT or equivalent analysis tools. Bluebeam and BIM collaboration platforms. Advanced knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD. About You Advanced technical skills and knowledge with a commitment to high‑quality, safe and compliant structural engineering outcomes.
