KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Knowledge of automotive gas and diesel, and heavy duty equipment.
Knowledge of the specialized equipment to be placed on public safety (police and fire) vehicles.
Knowledge of computerized diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of the City’s preventive maintenance program.
Knowledge of electrical/electronic systems on vehicles from automotive to public safety to heavy duty
equipment.
Knowledge of vehicle air conditioning systems and brake systems.
Skill in following oral and written instructions.
Skill in diagnosing automotive and heavy equipment operation problems.
Skill in troubleshooting, identifying, and solving mechanical problems.
Skill in interacting with people at all levels of the organization.
Physical Requirements: Work involves repetitive work of a mechanical nature with regular occurrences of
bending, stooping, and standing and of the need to move and lift heavy objects. Work involves both inside and
outside conditions, frequent exposure to heat, cold, adverse weather, greases, oils, solvents, fumes, noise,
chemicals and work in and around moving vehicles.
Qualifications: Requires High School Diploma or G.E.D. and the equivalent of completion of a recognized
training program in automotive gas and diesel mechanics and four (4) years of mechanical experience on
automotive gas and diesel vehicles, heavy-duty construction equipment, and specially fitted police and fire
equipment and apparatus. Must have air conditioning recovery and repair certification. Employees are required
to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses identified for their position and listed
in the most recent version of the NIMS Training Guide within one (1) year of placement into this position. Requires
a valid Florida CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement to be obtained within twelve (12) months of date
of hire.

Responsibilities

Enter daily assignments and labor information into computerized system. Maintains and repairs electrical
equipment in both A/C and D/C currents, stationary mounted generator sets in fire trucks, gas and diesel
engines; diagnoses, repairs and maintains plumbing and wiring; fabricates air and hydraulic pressure
systems; repairs and maintains cars, light trucks, light and heavy equipment (both gas and diesel).
Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains brake systems, clutches, axles, bearings, differentials, transmissions,
air conditioning, electrical wiring, diesel engines, and hydraulic pumps; repairs saws, mixers, air
compressors, mowers, and generators; services and maintains construction equipment in the shop and
as road service repairs; conducts preventive maintenance; coordinates services with the supervisor and
vendors.
Performs fuel line repairs; organizes and maintains the road service truck; keeps road service truck
operable and well stocked with supplies, parts, tools, and hardware; performs computer diagnostics to
determine what maintenance or repairs are required; performs complete engine overhauls and repairs;
cleans shop area, tools, and shop equipment; performs basic maintenance services as well as emergency
services as needed. Must meet schedule and attendance standards; regular hours, standby overtime,
and call out overtime as needed; performs other duties as assigned.
