Senior Briefings Officer - Full time, ongoing position based in Melbourne.
Reporting to the Manager, Briefings, you will be a key contact point for the legal community, responsible for the crucial task of engaging external counsel for criminal proceedings. In this high-stakes environment, you will use your exceptional judgment and communication skills to ensure the OPP is represented by the best legal talent available.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

As a Senior Briefing Officer, you will be instrumental in the seamless operation of our Briefing Services.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will be varied and challenging, requiring you to:

  • Act as a primary liaison with Barrister clerks, identifying and engaging the most suitable external counsel for complex legal matters.
  • Take ownership of the end-to-end contracting process, from creation and fee entry to ensuring full compliance with financial delegations and OPP policy.
  • Diligently monitor court lists to anticipate needs, ensure all matters are serviced, and maintain impeccable data accuracy.
  • Forge and maintain positive, sustainable working relationships with internal teams and key external stakeholders, including the Victorian Bar, resolving issues with professionalism and tact.
  • Develop and maintain a current, in-depth understanding of the criminal bar, including counsel specialties and availability, and update internal databases accordingly.

To be successful in this role, you will be a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a proven ability to excel in a demanding environment. You will possess:

  • High-level negotiation and influencing skills with a demonstrated ability to achieve positive outcomes with a diverse range of stakeholders.
