ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

  • 10+ years of successful business development experience in software, SaaS, or data services
  • Proven success selling to both SMB and enterprise customers
  • Strong consultative selling skills and ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments
  • A strong personal and professional network relevant to software and digital services
  • Confident leading from the front and mentoring others
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ambition to grow professionally and shape your role
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and negotiation skills
  • Self-starter with a strategic mindset and a hands-on approach
  • Experience using CRM and sales enablement tools to track and manage activity
  • Must be based in the UK with the ability to be in Reading at least 2 days per week
Responsibilities

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a highly motivated and commercially driven Senior Business Development Manager to join our growing team at The Virtual Forge. This is a player-coach role ideal for someone with a strong track record of sales success across both enterprise and SMB customers, particularly within software development and data services.
You will work directly with the Commercial CEO, gaining hands-on exposure to senior-level strategy and operations. Over time, you will take on a number of the CEO’s business development responsibilities, making this a genuine succession opportunity for someone eager to step into a senior leadership role.
The Virtual Forge works with world-class customers across Europe and North America, delivering innovative and scalable solutions that make a real impact. This is a unique opportunity for someone looking to grow professionally and help shape the commercial future of a forward-thinking technology business. There is a clear opportunity within the next two years to grow into a directorship role, with an open-ended career trajectory for the right person.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive new business acquisition across target markets (SMB and enterprise) in software and data services
  • Identify, qualify, and convert high-value sales opportunities through outbound prospecting, networking, and leveraging existing relationships
  • Build and maintain a strong sales pipeline with accurate forecasting and reporting
  • Develop account strategies and deliver value-based solutions tailored to customer needs
  • Lead key pitches and proposals, working closely with delivery and technical teams
  • Work alongside the Commercial CEO and gradually take on a leadership role in business development strategy and execution
  • Contribute to marketing, lead-generation strategy, and overall commercial planning
  • Represent the company at industry events, client meetings, and partnership forums
