POSITION SUMMARY

The Buyer reports to the Director of Supply Chain, and is a critical support of our supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution functions throughout the organization. They work cross-departmentally on initiatives such as vendor qualification, developing new sourcing opportunities, and supporting product launch activities. Work closely with the department manager to lead projects related to outsourcing, production schedule optimization and product supply-smoothing.
This position will achieve key KPI’s goals related to COG’s, inventory carry and customer order fill rate. The Buyer will work cross-functionally with R&D, Creative, QA/QC, Planning and Manufacturing departments.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or closely related field preferred; or equivalent years of work experience
  • Working knowledge of LEAN and/or Six Sigma Principles preferred
  • APICS Certification desirable but required
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment and with contract manufacturers required
  • Minimum 5+ years related experience with increasing levels of responsibility required
  • Proven management of processes
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Excel & ERP Systems (NetSuite preferred), required
  • Experience in the CPG industry is highly preferred

Responsibilities

Procurement Responsibilities

  • Work with the team and suppliers to create supply agreements and contracts to ensure an uninterrupted supply of materials while maintaining targeted inventory turn KPI goals.
  • Optimize the purchasing dollar by implementing negotiation strategies, volume discounting, and multi-source opportunities on key componentry and ingredient commodities to achieve COGS KPI goal.
  • Work closely with the department manager on qualifying new outsourced manufacturing partners.
  • Lead the cross-departmental initiative to secure secondary suppliers for existing items and work to qualify primary suppliers for new items.
  • Participate in continuous improvement with ERP system accuracy, utilization of system tools, and development of new functionality in partnership with our in-house ERP specialist.
  • Support the development of new market research systems and/or communication tools to maintain visibility on key commodity availability
  • Conduct commodity and industry research to keep the organization informed and positioned for potential supply shortages and strategies to mitigate; and supply advantages on the horizon.
  • Use statistical analysis to identify proper economic order quantities, seasonal trends, etc.to ensure product supply is in line with product demand
  • Anticipate and drive preparation for seasonal product demand, and new product launch support.
  • Support and contribute to SKU quarterly discontinuation process and implement changes related to decision outcomes
  • Ensure product supply is in line with product demand for achievement of customer order fill rate KPI
  • Continuously identify areas of process improvement to support the build, implementation, and maintenance of solutions.

Planning Support

  • Lead the scheduling of outsourced manufacturing activity, including the scheduling of consigned goods deliveries per manufacturing schedule requirements
  • In the absence of the Product Supply Manager:
  • Direct any scheduling changes needed to smooth/level load the weekly and daily production schedule
  • Send out manufacturing and compounding schedules on a daily basis, with appropriate lead times (generally, 1 day for manufacturing, 2 days for compounding)
  • Assist with daily out of stock reporting of finished goods
  • Cross-train on the manufacturing schedule-lock window in order to support in instances of coverage.
  • Review monthly forecast vs. actual performance and provide ongoing constructive feedback to process partners in operations and finance

Other

  • Support a safe working environment by reporting any unsafe conditions or observed, unsafe conduct.
  • Support the creation of department SOP’s and any related cross-training within the supply chain department
  • Support the Company’s efforts with conservation by searching for eco-friendly options for materials, sourcing locations, transportation, etc.
  • Establish and present monthly/quarterly reports based upon key metrics within the department (usage, pricing, supply)
  • Perform other tasks and projects as directed by the manager
