OVERVIEW:

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Buyer – Packaged Goods to lead procurement, vendor management, and category growth for shelf-stable grocery products. This role is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies, negotiating supplier agreements, optimizing assortment, and ensuring cost, quality, and service standards are consistently met. The Senior Buyer will manage the category’s full lifecycle—from forecasting and purchasing to promotional planning and performance analysis—while collaborating cross-functionally to deliver on margin and inventory goals.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Economics, Finance, or related field required.
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive experience in purchasing, procurement, or category management within packaged goods, grocery, or consumer products.
  • Proven track record in vendor negotiations, strategic sourcing, and inventory management.
  • Strong knowledge of packaged food industry trends, brand dynamics, and market competition.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required; experience with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle preferred.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments.
  • Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategic procurement of packaged goods categories, including dry grocery, canned, boxed, and other shelf-stable items.
  • Develop and execute sourcing strategies that align with company objectives, leveraging market trends, vendor capabilities, and category dynamics.
  • Negotiate costs, terms, and promotional support with manufacturers and distributors to maximize profitability and sales.
  • Monitor category KPIs, including cost of goods sold (COGS), service levels, inventory turns, and aging inventory.
  • Forecast demand by analyzing sales data, market conditions, seasonality, and promotional calendars to maintain optimal stock levels.
  • Collaborate with merchandising, marketing, operations, and finance to support product launches, promotions, and category resets.
  • Use advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, Power Query, data modeling) to analyze large datasets, build cost scenarios, and inform purchasing decisions.
  • Conduct post-promotion performance reviews to assess results and implement improvements.
  • Identify and mitigate supply chain risks through contingency planning and alternate sourcing.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, supplier agreements, and regulatory requirements for packaged food products.
  • Mentor junior buyers and procurement staff, sharing best practices and promoting professional development.
  • Partner with warehouse and logistics teams to ensure timely delivery and accurate product flow through distribution channels.
  • Resolve accounts payable and pricing discrepancies in coordination with suppliers and internal departments.
