The role involves consolidating cardiothoracic radiology diagnostic and interventional skills. This involves cardiac CT and MRI imaging as well as chest imaging and intervention.

UHNM has the largest lung cancer cohort in the West Midlands, has a large ILD service and hosts the Regional ILD MDT. There is a strong cardiac imaging service with over 2,500 cardiac MR scans performed per year (on Siemens 1.5T and 3T scanners) and a rapidly expanding Cardiac CT service (using Siemens 256 DRIVE scanner) with over 3000 cardiac CT scans performed annually. UHNM is one of the top five largest cardiothoracic surgery centres in the UK (with over 1500 surgical procedures per year) and is in the top 3 busiest Regional Major Trauma Centres in the UK; both services requiring significant cardiothoracic radiology input. UHNM is also a pilot site for the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme. The appointed fellow will gain excellent training in all aspects of cardiothoracic imaging.
The appointed fellow will be expected to prepare and present at the Thoracic and ILD MDTs. There are other Clinico-Radiology meetings including one for ITU.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.
The appointed fellow will be expected to prepare and present at the Thoracic and ILD MDT meetings. There are other Clinico-Radiology meetings including one for ITU.
In addition to core thoracic radiology, the applicants can gain experience in Cardiac CT and Cardiac MR. Interstitial Lung Disease, Lung Biopsies, General non-vascular interventions (Image guided biopsies, aspirations and drainages)
UHNM is a standalone radiology training scheme (a part of West Midlands School of Radiology). We currently have 35 trainees. The on-call services are well supported by radiology trainees 24/7. The fellow is not expected to cover on call, but will be expected to contribute to Radiologist of the day and extended seven day working on a rotational basis.
The Imaging Services are based on a strong ethos of Quality assurance, Audit, Evidence and Research. Successful applicants would be expected to actively engage in Governance and Audit and specifically contribute to the Department’s on-going ISAS accreditation. UHNM is a research active organization. There is a large number of active oncology trials, many of which require radiology support. The Imaging Department is also building up a portfolio of imaging-based research aligning to the Trust priority to become a major clinical research centre
