This position will involve working set days of Monday to Thursday as well as some weekends, long days and nights.
Middle grade doctors (this post) work a shift pattern incorporating normal days (08.45 – 17.00hrs), weekday long days (08.45 – 21.30hrs), weekend long days (09.00 – 21.30hrs) and nights (21.00 – 09.30hrs). This post is compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract.
The day-to-day work of the middle grade post varies according to need. Time will be split between providing cover to the Children’s Ward and Day Assessment Unit, the neonatal unit and post-natal ward and Out Patient clinics.
On the Children’s Ward, responsibilities will include regular ward rounds, supervised either directly or indirectly by the Duty Consultant of the week. Consultant supervision will always be available, but the level of this will depend on the individual doctor’s experience and requirements.
The level 2 Neonatal Unit provides short term intensive care only. The post therefore does not offer a high level of training in neonatology, but the doctor will be responsible, along with the F2/ST1/2, for the day-to-day supervision of the neonates on the Unit, for acute resuscitation and stabilisation and preparing babies for transfer out.
When covering the Day Assessment Unit, the doctor will work alongside the F2/ST1/2 in the assessment of new referrals and ward attenders. They will act as a source of advice for local GPs regarding paediatric patients. Consultant level supervision is also provided.
There are regular registrar-led clinics for assessment of new and follow up patients. All registrars participate in clinic activity on a rota basis. Consultant supervision and teaching is provided.
