The post holder will work on the second on call (ST3+) rota, and as such will take on the responsibilities associated with this role. The post holder will be supervised by a Consultant during clinical duties whether elective or on call and will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating good communication skills with all members of the team. The weekly timetable will vary from week to week. It will include sessions in antenatal clinic, delivery suite, gynaecology outpatients, gynaecology theatre and the emergency gynaecology assessment unit.
These sessions are aimed to diversify the post holders clinical experience, to provide a service and to accommodate the rolling on call rota of long days and night shifts on labour ward and the gynaecology acute treatment unit. On call frequency is 1 in 9. Antenatal clinic The post holder will be expected to: - Conduct the initial antenatal assessment of women, identify risk factors in the booking history, and consult or refer appropriately under the supervision of a senior registrar or consultant. - Counsel women adequately about the investigations offered during pregnancy, interpret the results, communicate the significance of abnormal results to the patient and arrange further management if needed.
- Detect and manage commonly occurring disorders in pregnancy, recognising their limitations, and referring to other colleagues in the team when necessary - Recognise the roles of the multidisciplinary team - Demonstrate good communication with patients and staffLabour Ward The post holder will work under the supervision of a Consultant Obstetrician on call or on hotweek and: - Work in conjunction with the senior Midwife - Be aware of the wishes and concerns of women in labour, and maintain their dignity, autonomy, physical and psychological comfort - Help in monitoring of fetal condition in labour - Assess and manage abnormal progress in labour - Have a chance to perform instrumental and operative deliveries. - Assist in the management of third stage complications - Assist in the management of maternal collapse and neonatal resuscitation Gynaecology Outpatients The post holder will be allocated to attend specific Gynaecology clinics, but are also encouraged to attend a variety of the more specialised clinics which provide valuable learning opportunities when possible. The post holder will: - be able to take a gynaecological history and perform an appropriate examination with respect for the womans dignity and autonomy - initiate investigation and management of common gynaecological problems such as disorders of menstruation, infertility, incontinence, menopausal symptoms, psychosexual problems and genital tract infections. - understand cervical screening, the management of pre invasive and invasive disease and treatment follow up - Demonstrate good communication with patients and staff Gynaecology Acute Treatment Unit The post holder will work under the supervision of the Consultant Gynaecologist on call or on hotweek and: - Take referrals from general practitioners, emergency department and other specialities concerning women with early pregnancy or acute gynaecological conditions - Assess and initiate management and / or treat common early pregnancy and acute gynaecological conditions - Participate in acute gynaecology procedures including surgical management of miscarriage, manual vacuum aspiration in office setting, Word catheter insertion for Bartholins and laparoscopic surgery.
- Review women after elective gynaecology surgeryGynaecology Theatre The post-holder will observe, assist or undertake procedures in theatre with an appropriate level of supervision. On-call- The post-holder will always be resident in the hospital when on duty. The Consultant Obstetrician will be resident between 08.30-22.00 on weekdays and 08.30 and 17.00 on weekends. The Consultant Gynaecologist will be resident between 08.30 and 17.00 on weekdays and will conduct a resident ward round on weekends.
