This exciting 12-month post is ideal for post-fellowship anaesthetic specialty registrars seeking to develop their expertise in perioperative medicine and anaesthesia for major oncological surgery. Based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, this role includes supervised sessions in theatre, experience on the Oncological Critical Care Unit (OCCU), and attendance at high-risk anaesthetic and CPET clinics. Dedicated time is provided for supported professional activities such as audit, research, and quality improvement projects. The post is particularly suited to those undertaking Out-of-Programme Experience (OOPE) or seeking post-CCT development in a tertiary cancer centre
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of perioperative care for patients undergoing complex oncological procedures including HIPEC, robotic surgery, and major cytoreductive operations. Duties include anaesthetic sessions in theatre, clinical shifts on the OCCU, and participation in consultant-led pre-assessment and CPET clinics. There are opportunities for involvement in education and clinical research, including participation in the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) and Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP). The role does not include routine on-call commitments, though additional paid shifts may be offered depending on experience. Job planning will be tailored to the candidate’s background and interests.
The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
