Senior CNC Programmer Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living. The Senior CNC Programmer creates CNC programs using CAD/CAM software and improves machining processes by optimizing material removal rates to enhance tool life and efficiency. The role ensures the successful completion of CNC programming objectives as defined by management. What will you be doing? The role is primarily responsible for CNC Programming & Machining Process Development, including creating and maintaining CNC programs using CAD/CAM software, developing standardized machining processes, selecting tooling and cutting parameters, executing machine prove-outs, implementing cycle time and quality improvements, and maintaining the master CNC program directory in compliance with programming standards and best practices. In addition, the role provides Production & Engineering Support by assisting CNC machinists with troubleshooting, training, and daily operational support; Process Validation & Documentation through preparing work instructions, supervising machining validations, operator training, and supporting jig, fixture, and equipment design and selection; and HSE, Cross‑Functional & Other Responsibilities, ensuring compliance with HSE, sustainability, and energy policies, collaborating with Quality, Operations, Facilities, and HSE teams, working shifts or overtime as required, and performing other duties assigned by management. What will you need to be successful? Based in Penang, Malaysia, this role requires a high school education, with a technical or college degree considered an advantage, and a minimum of five years of CNC programming experience, including at least three years using CAD/CAM software. Strong preference is given to candidates with multi‑axis (5+) CNC mill/turn or grinding experience, prior machining or manufacturing background, and exposure to regulated industries such as medical, automotive, or aerospace. The role demands the ability to respond effectively to routine and emergency production needs to maintain consistent part flow, with travel requirements ranging from 25–50%. The position requires advanced competencies in developing reliable machining processes for low‑volume, high‑mix components, a detailed understanding of GD&T, and the ability to function as a subject matter expert and mentor for machinists. Effective communication with Manufacturing Engineering, Product Development, and plant personnel is essential, along with the ability to clearly summarize technical information for operators and management. The role involves moderate physical demands, including standing and walking for extended periods, with occasional bending, squatting, and reaching, and reasonable accommodations may be provided as needed.
