SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

The Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) is Alberta’s automotive industry regulator. AMVIC is a public agency accountable to the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction and the Government of Alberta. AMVIC protects consumers and industry from unfair practices in the automotive business industry. Consumer protection and a fair marketplace are achieved through AMVIC-managed mandatory licensing for automotive businesses and salesperson registrations as required by the Consumer Protection Act.
AMVIC has an immediate opening for a senior communications specialist in our Edmonton office. If you are a self-motivated individual who enjoys working as part of a small team while addressing our diverse audience with targeted, timely and meaningful communication and education efforts we have an exciting opportunity for you to explore.
This position reports to the communications and education managers and resides in the Edmonton, and on occasion overtime and out-of-town travel may be required to meet job demands with prior approval from communications and education manager.

Qualifications and technical skills:

  • Successful completion of post-secondary diploma or degree in communications, journalism, media or public relations; or with a combination of education and at least seven years of related work experience.
  • Ability to perform communication related duties with deliberate speed and accuracy independently.
  • Previous government and/or political experience is preferred as well as a knowledge of federal, provincial and municipal government services.
  • Supervisory experience along with coaching, mentoring and performance management experience are assets.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office software products and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Google Analytics, MailChimp, X, Instagram and Facebook.
  • Proven ability and knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.). Graphic and website design experience would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of media processes and interviewing skills, including confidence in dealing with media outlets.
  • Strong working knowledge of The Canadian Press Stylebook.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, project management, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work under time restraints and adapt to changing job priorities.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Display a high level of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage demanding and stressful situations.
  • Skilled in issues management and crisis communications.
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines.

Responsibilities
  • Perform assigned duties as delegated by the communications and education manager.
  • Represent the manager of communications and education in an acting capacity as required.
  • Identify issues and work with executive team to advise on mitigation strategies and approaches.
  • Lead on development of website content including, writing, editing and posting content for all departments.
  • Responsible for document upkeep on Wordpress website.
  • Backup to the senior communications and education manager for the education duties of grading registrants and managing the education inbox.
  • Backup to the senior communications and education manager for monitoring of AMVIC’s social media accounts, including X, Facebook and Instagram.
  • Assist in the creation of advertising content and planning.
  • Assists in the organization and coordination of all external public events.
  • Represent AMVIC at appropriate trade shows.
  • Generate proactive media opportunities and educational initiatives.
  • Lead responses to media requests, acting as main AMVIC spokesperson.
  • Research media and communications contacts in Alberta.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with all team members.
  • Collaborate with communications and education manager on special projects as required.
  • Develop strategic communication plans that support effective communication to intended audiences, in conjunction with the communications and education manager.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, proposals, media, press releases and other documents as requested.
  • Lead development of the annual report.
  • Monitor Legislative Assembly documents and records, particularly when the House is in session to report if AMVIC is mentioned or if something can affect AMVIC.
  • Generally monitor news and social media for relevant stories or possible issues that may become newsworthy.
  • Oversee the production and distribution of AMVIC public relations materials (newsletters, business plans, information brochures and handouts, etc.) for content as well as design and printing.
  • Purchase public relations products within budget as needed.
  • Review AMVIC office documents upon request for adherence to the AMVIC Style Guide.
  • Train new AMVIC staff on the AMVIC Style Guide.
  • Other duties as assigned.
