The District of West Vancouver Planning Department is seeking an experienced planning professional for the position of Senior Community Planner. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Community Planning and Sustainability, this position will be responsible for:

  • Initiating and managing various long-range planning projects, typically with a high level of public involvement and scrutiny.
  • Interacting with the general public, community interest groups, elected officials, council committees, development proponents, staff from a variety of District departments, and external agencies.
  • Acting as the District’s primary liaison with the local business community and primary staff resource for matters and files related to local economic development.
  • Undertaking technical analysis/evaluation for a broad range of projects and produce comprehensive reports and recommendations on public policy, including confidential reports of a politically sensitive nature, for submission to superiors, committees and Council.
  • Supporting the review and processing of complex development applications.
  • Developing and delivering effective presentations to the community and other stakeholders.
  • Preparing, monitoring and overseeing project related budgets within the overall departmental budget.
  • Managing staff resources on a project basis as well as coaches and mentors junior staff members.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

The preferred candidate will possess:

  • A Master’s degree in community planning or related field, plus at least 8 years of community planning experience preferably with a local government, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligibility for full membership in the Planning Institute of BC.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and laws relating to community planning including current literature, trends and issues.
  • Some experience in development planning would be considered an asset.
  • A valid BC Driver’s License.

The successful candidate will bring excellent writing and presentation skills, be highly organized, and demonstrate strength as a facilitator and consensus-builder. They will be adaptable to changing conditions and capable of developing innovative solutions to emerging challenges. They will manage their own plans and projects to successful completion and exercise a high degree of independent judgment.
The successful candidate will be required to supply an acceptable criminal record check and a copy of their credentials.
Position Status:
Exempt – Permanent Full-Time
Hours of Work:
35 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)
This position is eligible for the “Earned Day Off” program
Rate of Pay
$108,900 - $129,400 per annum
