Job Description Summary
Aims to deliver the highest quality customer driven software whilst continually challenging, motivating, mentoring and supporting their engineering teams. They will work in cross-disciplinary teams delivering exciting customer driven solutions and high quality software and showcase excellent interpersonal and communication skill whilst efficiently working across the project life cycle to ensure software operates as intended. This is a leadership level role and will blend both deep domain and technical expertise within a feature team and great passion for coaching and developing people in a “player-coach” model.

Senior Data Engineer
Salary: £68,202 to £75,780
Location: Edinburgh
Hours: Full time
Working Pattern: At least 2 days per week in our London office.
About this opportunity
In the Payments Services Platform (PSP), our mission is to provide compliant and efficient domestic and international payments capabilities for the Group and drive innovation to enable customers to move money confidently, quickly and securely. This role is in the Enterprise & Accounting Lab within the Payments Platform and specifically in the Data Product team. The Data Product team sits at the heart of payments. We build products around payments data using cutting edge technologies and agile ways of working.

As a Data Engineer, you’ll:

  • Work in cross-disciplinary teams delivering exciting customer driven solutions and high quality data products showcasing your technical, interpersonal and communication skills whilst supporting the software across the product lifecycle
  • Work with a range of key stakeholders, external partners and our internal development and testing teams, to support the successful achievement of IT strategies.
  • Have a mindset of continuous learning, mentoring and keeping abreast of latest development in data technology and data engineering practices

What you’ll need
You would have a breadth of experience across the following software technologies:

Required skills & experience

  • Strong expert level experience of SQL for querying and transforming data
  • Strong skills in data modelling, database design, indexing, query optimization, storage optimisation
  • Experience in designing and implementing data warehouses especially cloud based
  • Experience with SoRs, SoIs, SoEs and handling reference data
  • Knowledge and experience of both RDBMS and NoSQL databases
  • Proficiency in working with JSON and XML data formats
  • Programming proficiency with stored procedures, Java, Python or similar for scripting and automation.
  • Familiarity with Cloud platforms from a data perspective and migration of data to cloud
  • Experience with data governance, data compliance and security
  • Experience with data visualisation tools like Tableau

Desirable skills & experience

  • Using Google data technologies including BigQuery and Spanner
  • Experience with DBT for data transformations and modelling
  • Experience in Google Dataflow for data processing and ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • Knowledge of payment message formats e.g. ISO20022
  • Knowledge of big data technologies including Hadoop, Kafka and Apache Spark
