Description

As a digital spearhead in Mercedes-Benz Cars' procurement and supplier quality department, we are revolutionizing the daily work of our colleagues. Advanced analytics and AI are not just buzzwords for us, but our passion, which we are able to pursue in our projects. We develop predictive models, implement the latest AI technologies, and are the architects of the data platform for our entire business unit. With our digital projects, we create real added value through data-driven decision-making, thereby not only making our colleagues' work easier but also realizing significant financial potential for our company.

As a Senior Data Engineer, you are the backbone of this platform: You build the data pipelines that transform scattered raw data into robust, production-ready data products — and you understand not only the code, but also the underlying purchasing process that you are driving.

You don't just want to build pipelines, you want to see how your work influences real purchasing decisions worth billions? We're a small team with short lines of communication, taking technical excellence seriously while still thinking pragmatically. No endless approval processes, no showcase projects—we build things that are actually used. With people who care about that just as much as you do.

Your tasks in detail:

  • Design, development and operation of robust, scalable data pipelines on the Azure platform — from the raw data source to the consumable data product (ADF, Databricks, ADLS, Synapse, Azure Data Explorer, EventHub)
  • Identification and exploration of relevant data sources in the purchasing environment: understanding data structures, assessing quality, and developing data cleansing strategies.
  • Integration of new data sources into the existing Azure infrastructure — while adhering to company-wide security and governance standards.
  • Design and implementation of scalable data models and backend features for data-driven applications and analytics products
  • Ensuring the stable operation of productive data solutions: monitoring, error analysis, and continuous improvement of runtime and reliability.
  • Close collaboration with specialist colleagues in purchasing: gathering technical requirements, translating them into technical solution concepts and jointly bringing them to production readiness.
  • Contributing to the design of the area's data architecture — from technical implementation to strategic development of the platform.
  • Knowledge transfer and professional support from teammates as well as active participation in agile development processes (Scrum/Kanban)

Qualifications

The mobility of tomorrow is not a matter of chance, but is based on data-driven decisions. Become part of the new digital generation at Mercedes-Benz and rewrite our company's automotive history!

Ideally, you should bring the following:

  • Completed studies in computer science, business informatics, or mathematics.
  • Engineering or a comparable course of study
  • Several years of professional experience in data engineering or a comparable role with a demonstrable focus on the design and operation of data pipelines
  • Solid, hands-on experience with Azure data services: ideally Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, ADLS, Synapse Analytics and/or Azure Data Explorer
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and SQL; knowledge of R or other languages is a plus.
  • Understanding of data quality assurance, data modeling, and the specific characteristics of production data in complex business environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD practices and DevOps processes in the context of data operations (e.g., pipeline versioning, automated testing, deployment automation)
  • Strong ability to communicate with technical stakeholders on an equal footing — explaining technical concepts in an understandable way, gathering requirements in a structured manner
  • Fluent German skills and very good English skills

Personal skills:

  • Passion for craftsmanship: You build data pipelines that not only function, but are also maintainable, documented, and reliable in the long term.
  • Pragmatic problem-solving skills: You find the right balance between technical perfection and a deliverable solution.
  • Personal responsibility and proactivity — you identify weaknesses in existing solutions and address them without having to wait for someone else to notice them.
  • Curiosity about the business context — you want to understand why a data point is important, not just how it flows.
  • Willingness to quickly familiarize yourself with a new field: Purchasing knowledge is not a requirement, but genuine curiosity about it is.
  • Strong communication skills on both levels: You are the contact person for specialist colleagues in purchasing as well as for other developers in the team.
  • Team spirit and a passion for actively exchanging knowledge — you enjoy helping colleagues and learning just as much yourself.
