About the role
At Balfour Beatty, we’re looking for a Senior Design and Engineering Manager to lead the technical delivery of major, complex construction projects across the UK. From pre-construction through to delivery, you’ll play a critical role in influencing design, driving innovation, and ensuring technical excellence while championing safety and sustainability.
What you’ll be doing

As a Senior Design and Engineering Manager, you will:

• Lead the development of efficient construction solutions during the bid and pre-construction phases of complex major projects.
• Ensure designs meet customer requirements for safety, budget, buildability, environmental impact, and community benefit.
• Provide expert construction methodology advice to influence design from the earliest stages.
• Manage design partner relationships and implement robust design assurance and management processes.
• Coordinate the integration of MEP and supply chain partners into the design process.
• Oversee temporary works design and ensure integration with permanent works.
• Support BIM implementation, digital engineering, and the use of modern methods of construction.
• Drive lean construction principles to reduce waste and improve productivity.
• Provide buildability reviews, risk mitigation planning, and contribute to value engineering.
• Capture lessons learned and support training and development across teams.
• Promote and embed Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm and sustainability values in everything we do.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who brings:

• Significant senior-level experience delivering design and engineering services on large, complex infrastructure projects.
• Proven ability to lead design strategies from work-winning through to construction delivery.
• Strong knowledge of BIM, digital tools, and the latest design and procurement methods.
• Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively under pressure.
• Chartered membership of ICE, CIOB or similar professional body.
• Proficiency in design and engineering software (Autodesk suite desirable), and strong Microsoft Office skills.
• A passion for mentoring others, driving innovation, and continuous improvement.
