Job Title: Senior Design Engineer (Drainage)
Location: Watford
Our client, Taylor Woodrow, a leading UK infrastructure and civil engineering specialist, is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join their team in Watford.
In this role, you will lead the design, management, and delivery of sustainable drainage and SuDS solutions across a variety of projects. Your focus will be on mitigating flood risk, enhancing environmental quality, and supporting urban development through innovative, compliant, and cost-effective designs. You will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of safety and quality.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCE

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional accreditation (preferred).
  • Proven experience in the design and delivery of SuDS and surface water drainage projects.
  • Proficiency with drainage modelling and analysis software (e.g. MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, ICM or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation and design guidance, including the Flood and Water Management Act and the SuDS Manual.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, delivery, and management of drainage and SuDS systems, ensuring compliance with local, national, and environmental regulations.
  • Develop innovative surface water management solutions, incorporating SuDS features such as attenuation ponds, swales, permeable pavements, and green roofs.
  • Undertake hydraulic and hydrological modelling to assess requirements and develop effective solutions.
  • Provide expert technical advice and guidance to clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary project teams on SuDS design, best practice, and legislation.
  • Carry out site surveys and condition assessments of existing drainage systems, identifying capacity constraints and recommending improvements.
  • Produce detailed designs, flood risk assessments, technical reports, calculations, and specifications in accordance with industry standards (e.g. DMRB, CIRIA, SuDS Manual).
  • Support planning applications and contribute to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) with a focus on water management.
  • Integrate SuDS within wider civil engineering designs, coordinating with highways, utilities, and landscaping teams to deliver sustainable, cost-efficient outcomes.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Monitor the performance of implemented systems, undertaking maintenance reviews to ensure long-term compliance and effectiveness.
