Our Commercial & Industrial division designs, fabricates and constructs structural steelwork for a variety of different sectors including commercial offices, stadia & leisure, industrial & distribution, data centres, retail and health and education.
The division has manufacturing sites in three locations: Dalton, Lostock, and Enniskillen. Each has full-service capabilities and modern manufacturing processes enabling us to provide a high-quality product to a variety of different sectors. Each of our sites has its own strong reputation in the market and between them cover a wider geographical area, including Europe. They continue to set the bar high in their highly complex market!
Vacancy Details
In the Senior Design Engineer position you will produce engineering design from tender appraisal through to construction issue.
This will encompass site evaluation, architectural requirements and engineering design, investigations of any technical problems encountered and provision of economical and viable solutions.
The role is typically held by more experienced members of staff who perhaps are not eager to progress any further within their career, or by staff wanted to progress from Design Engineer.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND REQUIRED

Degree in Structural Engineering Masters desired not essential. If do not hold degree, then relevant on the job experience essential
May have achieved a professional engineering qualification or be working towards one e.g. MIStructE / MIEI /MICE

Responsibilities
  • Work as part of the team producing engineering solutions and calculations.
  • Learn, develop and produce within the role and accept secondment to other departments to support learning, e.g. site, estimating, contract management.
  • With support from a more senior engineer, when required, provide engineering services as required, for example member design, connection design and temporary works for our Design
  • Provide structural designs at tender stage, when required.
  • Assist in the development of procedures etc for the standardisation of structural solutions and structural details commensurate with the Company’s manufacturing and erection approach.
  • With support from a more senior engineer, when required, develop schemes structurally for awarded contracts, sourcing information and liaising with Client’s Architects, Structural Consultants etc.
  • Liaise with other departments within the business e.g. Contract teams, manufacturing and site erection departments.
  • Communicate designs / engineering solutions clearly and effectively using manual or electronic drafting methods with correct grammar and accurate calculations using appropriate codes of practice / techniques. Control and manage the flow of information both into the design function and output from the design function to ensure that designs reflect the latest available data.
  • Provide advice, guidance and support to Graduate Design Engineers.
  • Stepping stone between Design Engineering Manager and Design Engineer
  • Running projects – taking on extra responsibility within the team
