Work Location: Predominantly office based in St. Helens
A Senior Electrical Design engineer will manage the design of multiple switchgear/package substation project from start to finish. From the first contact with the customer for the definition of the solution to managing TQs during installation and testing.
As a senior member of the engineering team, you will be responsible for the on time and on budget delivery of multiple major projects with contract values ranging from £100k to £1million plus.
Directly reporting to the Engineering Manager.
Senior Electrical design main responsibilities include:
- Project management of electrical projects (from cradle to grave).
- Understanding customer requirements.
- Creation and or checking of electrical diagrams and wiring schematics required by the project (single line diagrams, Keyline diagrams, AC & DC, wiring, etc.,).
- Checking of technical documentations such as load schedules, cable calcs…etc.
- Working in collaboration with production department to create the list of materials and component specifications.
- Give technical support to the rest of the team (Commercials, production, etc.)
- Give technical advice and assistance within the organization on electrical (HV, LV and P&C) matters.
- Be involved and lead the project during the manufacturing, internal verification testing, customer facing FATs, installation, and commissioning activities.
- Delivering training to internal colleagues and external customers.
- Developing engineering standards and providing support in developing standard solutions.
- Developing substations design both with GRP substations and Metal Enclosures
- Managing sub-contractor designer and checking of third party works.
- Undertaking business development activities to improve design processes and company procedures and develop engineering standards to improve quality and lead times.
Required Skills:
- 6+ years of experience within the electrical industry ideally specialising in 33kv design.
- Formal engineering qualification BEng within electrical engineer discipline.
- Knowledge of power system protection schemes, at 11kV & 33kV.
- A good working knowledge of AUTOCAD.
- Demonstrable Project management skills manging multiple projects at once.
- Knowledge of the UK standards and presentation of electrical schematics within the MV/HV industry.
- Protection and control systems design experience according to DNO standards in the UK.
- Good knowledge of protection relays and experience creating settings and PSL files would be viewed favourably. Familiarity with ABB, SE and GE relays of benefit.
- As part of our substation design, a knowledge of LV electrical installations and BS7671 18th edition wiring regulations would be useful but not essential.
- Awareness of relevant ENA standards would be advantageous.
- A flexible approach. We sometimes must assist with and cover colleagues’ duties. We work as a team to achieve our company goals.
- The candidate may be required to occasionally visit sites and possibly our factories in Spain.
- Basic knowledge of SAP also of interest.
- We are a solutions company, problem solving is an essential skill.
- Experience testing numerical relays using a Omicron CMC356 or similar test equipment would be seen as favourable.
- Experience managing customer and running factory acceptance tests or similar customer facing roles would be beneficial.
