SENIOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPER - MONETISE

We’re looking for a proactive senior software developer with several years of experience who can help us build and deprecate infrastructure to support our eCommerce capabilities across our platforms.
Monetise is a domain in Springer Nature Technology, responsible for the eCommerce capabilities that serve customers: institutions, businesses, and consumers. This includes the eCommerce journeys on Springer Link, Nature+, the Single eBook Store, and the supporting checkouts and payment gateways
The job is based in our recently opened Lisbon hub but will be working in cross-location teams. We offer a mixed remote/office working with up to four days per week working from home. You’ll be part of our bigger community of developers located in Portugal, Germany, UK and India.

ABOUT US

We are looking for skilled and passionate software developers to help us build the best products to enable the research community to advance the progress and understanding of science.
We need a senior software developer to work in the Monetise domain, which is responsible for enabling a seamless eCommerce experience across our digital platforms so that researchers can easily identify, acquire, and access SN offerings that can best help them in and accelerate their careers.
We strive to continually improve user journeys; allowing customers to discover, access, and purchase content and solutions in a way that suits them. Our customer-centric approach is fundamental to the way we work.
As a senior developer, you will have the opportunity to work with several teams as we transition from an at times fragmented or duplicated set of services to a coordinated set of eCommerce capabilities ready to support the growth and diversification of our eCommerce business.
We also work closely with partners across the organisation to evolve our content and business models; keeping us competitive in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
You will be joining a cross functional team with different nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels. All team members collaborate to deliver solutions that best satisfy the needs of researchers and other readers.

ABOUT YOU

• You have several years of experience developing software in Java, Kotlin, or Scala.
• You have hands-on experience in Scala, and your knowledge of cats is an asset.
• You know how and when to refactor and embrace it as a natural step in the development process
• You enjoy mentoring less experienced developers.
• You are adaptable, and pragmatic and can work where needed in the short term to move us closer to our longer-term goals
• You can apply your previous experience to new technologies and tools comfortably and with confidence.
• You know when to ask for help and are happy to learn from others as well as share your knowledge
• You like working in a collaborative team, where there is collective ownership of the product.
• You enjoy getting involved with every stage of the software development lifecycle.
• You have experience with and would enjoy working in a Test Driven environment and understand the benefits.
• You have experience with and would enjoy pair programming and working in a trunk-based development environment; practising Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery, but can adapt to mixed practices where required.
• You see the value in developers owning production software and view failure as a chance to learn.
• Knowledge of any of these is a plus: concourse, http4k, Grafana, Loki, Prometheus, GCP, BigQuery, amplitude

  What you will be doing

Within 3 Months you will:

• Get familiar with our technology stack. All our new applications are built in Kotlin using http4k. Many existing applications that are still being maintained and evolved are in Scala. Our applications are deployed to CloudFoundry using Concourse.
• Take part in developing new features as a member of the tech team.
• Get familiar with, and take part in, the team’s agile processes and ceremonies.

• Coach junior members of the team.Triage support queries and diagnose issues in the live applications.

By 3-6 months you will:

• Be a supportive member of the tech team, understanding our end-to-end, developing our infrastructure, including non-functional requirements, and working closely with our technology and Production partners.
• Have an understanding of the team’s context within the publishing business they are working in.
• Lead technical discussions with the team in order to improve the product architecture and code quality.
• Be able to understand and discuss business requirements with stakeholders and Product Owners.

• Contribute to blameless post-mortems.Take part in the recruiting process, helping to assess applicants across SND.

By 6-12 months you will:

• Onboard new members to the team or help other teams with the onboarding process.
• Transform high-level requirements into actionable work.
• Proactively provide useful and actionable feedback to team members.
• Become an advocate for defining and implementing non-functional requirements.
• Influence the design of the system architecture.

• Be able to explain and visualise the benefits and trade-offs of proposed solutions.Understand our customers’ needs, both internal and external, and how your work affects their experience.

As part of an Agile product team, day-to-day you will:

• Take part in our daily stand-ups.
• Contribute to ceremonies like planning, story writing, collaborative design and retrospectives.
• Develop new features and improve code quality by pair programming with other team members, as well as working independently.
• Take part in support and monitoring of our websites.
