Job Description: Overall Purpose of the Role The Development Scientist designs, develops, and optimizes colorant and dispersion formulations for the paints, coatings, and inks industry, ensuring compliance with performance, stability, sustainability, and regulatory requirements. The role plays a key part in driving innovation, product enhancement, and technical problem‑solving within the laboratory and across cross‑functional teams, with a focus on developing solutions tailored to customer and market needs. Key Responsibilities Design and develop new colorant and dispersion formulations aligned with performance, cost, and regulatory targets Adapt, refine, and optimize existing formulations to improve performance, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and sustainability Conduct laboratory‑scale experiments and generate performance and stability data Validate formulation performance through testing and analytical evaluation Prepare stability studies and reports to ensure long‑term product reliability Collaborate with product management, technical service, regulatory, production, and quality control teams to ensure product readiness Work with cross‑regional and cross‑functional internal and external teams to validate formulations under application‑relevant conditions Interface with regulatory teams to ensure compliance with applicable standards and product safety requirements Maintain accurate documentation, including formulation data, stability reports, and technical specifications Support innovation initiatives, participate in innovation workshops, and contribute to intellectual property generation Troubleshoot formulation‑related issues and propose effective corrective actions Support scale‑up activities and transfer formulations to production teams Core Competencies Strong expertise in the development of colorants and dispersions for the paints, coatings, and inks industry Analytical thinking and data interpretation skills Innovative mindset with strong problem‑solving capabilities Effective cross‑functional and cross‑regional collaboration and communication High proficiency in technical documentation and reporting Strong regulatory and safety awareness Project ownership, prioritization, and time‑management skills Requirements Doctoral, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field Minimum of 10 years of experience in formulation development of colorants and dispersions for the paints, coatings, and inks industry Strong understanding of raw materials, additives, and formulation strategies Hands‑on experience with laboratory testing, stability analysis, and performance validation Familiarity with regulatory standards and product safety requirements Proficiency in technical documentation and formulation or data management software Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional, and cross‑regional environment Penn Color, Inc. is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
