SENIOR DEVOPS ENGINEER

Job Type: Contract (12 months, with possibility of extension)
Location: Edmonton, AB (Remote with occasional onsite)
Pay Rate: Up to $90 per hour
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer with strong expertise in OpenShift and Kubernetes to lead platform operations and infrastructure initiatives. This role will focus on supporting containerized environments, building automation pipelines, and driving modern DevOps practices across multiple teams.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on engineer with leadership capability, able to architect solutions, resolve complex technical issues, and promote DevOps best practices in a large-scale enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage OpenShift and Kubernetes platform operations (on-premises and cloud).
  • Design and implement scalable, secure, and highly available clusters.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support application deployment.
  • Automate cluster provisioning, scaling, and upgrades using Ansible, Helm, and Terraform.
  • Monitor and optimize platform performance, health, and capacity.
  • Implement and enforce security best practices (RBAC, encryption, patching).
  • Define backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure and application issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, vendors, and stakeholders to support delivery.
  • Promote DevOps culture, automation, and containerization across teams.
  • Provide support for legacy deployment tools (such as BuildMaster) and assist with modernization efforts.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 7+ years of experience in DevOps, Cloud, or Platform Engineering roles.
  • Proven expertise in OpenShift and Kubernetes administration.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Helm, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with containerization, orchestration, and monitoring tools.
  • Solid understanding of infrastructure security, backup, and disaster recovery.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor teams in DevOps practices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in complex enterprise environments.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with BuildMaster or similar release automation tools.
  • Previous experience in public sector or enterprise-scale transformation projects.
  • Familiarity with cloud service providers (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Knowledge of observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, etc.).

Work Arrangement

  • Primarily remote role with occasional travel to Edmonton, AB for meetings or workshops.
  • Contractors must provide their own computer and software.
  • Criminal record check may be required.
  • Duration: 12 months, with potential for extension.
  • Familiarity with virtualization technologies (VMware) and enterprise software solutions.
  • Experience in Agile methodologies and IT project management practices.
