BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 4+ years utility substation P&C design experience (15kV through to 500kV).
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program OR an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards, such as: NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA and ANSI.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate with project engineers, designers and client representatives.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Vehicle driver’s license for multi-state travel required.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to be licensed within one year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of substation P&C design experience
  • AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or Bluebeam experience
  • Proficiency with SEL or GE relays
  • SCADA system & communications interface knowledge
  • Relay settings/System Protection experience
  • Substation lightning stroke shielding plan and grounding plan experience
  • Software experience with ETAP, ASPEN, acSELerator, SKM, WinIGS, CYME, CAPE and/or GE URsetup
  • Ability to lead a large portion or the entirety of a substation design project.
Responsibilities
  • Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment.
  • Proficient in design of protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer design and protection schemes and associated settings.
  • Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design.
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Basic understanding of substation design to include equipment arrangements.
  • Create Substation P&C design project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.
  • Ability to read, interpret, design, and engineer P&C designs for utilities through 500kV, including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cable lists, settings, relays, and SCADA.
  • Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and installation coordination.
  • Perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.
  • Experience checking designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to client standards.
  • Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, material suppliers, and clients.
  • Visit sites, advise on P&C Engineering issues and modify designs to solve issues during construction.
  • Manage budgets and project schedules.
  • Prepare/create engineering and construction estimate documents for the installation of new, or modifications to existing substations, including: bill of materials, yard layouts, plans and section views, and electrical details.
  • Prepare substation ground grid, rigid and strain bus, and raceway designs.
  • Design auxiliary AC and DC power systems.
  • Create/modify technical specifications for major substation equipment, such as: power transformers, power circuit breakers and control house.
  • Develop system integration of protection, control and monitoring systems by coordinating with other engineers, as appropriate.
  • Provide engineering, construction, testing and commissioning support for projects.
  • Apply field mark-ups of project as built-up drawings and perform basic calculations, such as: voltage drop, CT burden and saturation, lighting and short circuit…all with minimal supervision.
  • Up to 25% travel required.
  • Complete other duties as assigned, including a willingness to temporarily fill-in for other roles/duties as required.
