PSE’s Energy Supply Merchant team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Senior Energy Trader position!

JOB DESCRIPTION

As part of the Day Ahead Power Trading Team, the candidate will be assisting with the management of physical and financial wholesale energy transactions that drive business growth and manage risk. Manages a diverse and complex portfolio of power, natural gas, transmission, and environmental instruments, ensuring alignment with approved mandates and risk management policies. Utilizes advanced trading methods such as futures, options and swaps.
Collaborates with cross- functional teams, including trading, plant operations, Energy Risk Control, Planning, Regulatory affairs, Analytics, and Legal, to develop and maintain a deep understanding of market trends, regulatory requirements, and business opportunities. Works independently to drive revenue and mitigate costs through innovative trading strategies and risk management practices.
Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE’s operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, mathematics, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least six (6) years of experience with trading in a variety of products, including physical power and gas.
  • Working knowledge of energy risk management.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in high pressure situations with uncertainty, ambiguity, and competing deadlines.
  • Highly quantitative with the ability to do financial modeling with thorough analysis.
  • Requires independent judgment using analysis of a variety of factors.
  • Ability to multi-task and work autonomously in a stressful, dynamic environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to receive assignments in the form of objectives and determine tactical approach.
  • Quick learning curve with the ability to receive, process, and transact on information.
  • Must possess strong analytical and decision making skills and the ability to negotiate successful outcomes.
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to contribute to department level results and goals.
  • Ability to self-motivate and create opportunities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in trading within the utility and energy industry.
  • Experience with options and swaps.
  • Solid understanding of generation, transmission, ISO/RTO/EIM (Energy Imbalance Market) markets and pipeline operations.
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest regional transmission system.
  • Knowledge of Western Systems Power Pool (WSPP) agreement.
Responsibilities
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and assists with training and mentoring other energy traders.
  • Identifies opportunities and recommends risk mitigation strategies based on current and changing market conditions.
  • Maintains a continuous assessment of positions, risk, in response to changing operating conditions and contractual obligations.
  • Collaborates with other teams in analyzing complex transactions to ensure that risks and benefits are identified and managed.
  • Effectively communicates opportunities, market fundamentals, and trends to management.
  • Responsible for executing wholesale energy transactions to meet cost effective load obligations and to maximize the value of generation and other assets to minimize overall costs.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable FERC orders, NERC, WECC, and other applicable reliability standards, and transmission tariffs and business practices.
  • Develops and executes of dispatch strategies of available generation and resources for optimization of PSE’s portfolio of assets including coordination of outages and availability of assets.
  • Collaborates with origination to review asset acquisitions.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of market developments and supply/demand fundamentals.
  • Maintains an accurate position report.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with market participants.
  • Coordinates, tracks and reports on the status and performance of assigned portfolios.
  • Possess working knowledge of enabling agreements including WSPP, ISDA, and NAESB.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
