SUMMARY

The Senior Engineer, Substations is to provide technical leadership, expert advice, guidance, mentorship, and have oversite to all Substation Engineering related projects. They are responsible to ensure that the Substations Engineering Team is completing the handover of high-quality design packages to the customer or project team, on schedule, and is responsible to resolve design related issues and field level questions while projects are underway.
They will be responsible for the accuracy, quality and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for substation projects of all sizes. They will contribute to substation bid proposals, estimates, material calculations and is accountable for the accuracy of quoted work. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders are required by the Senior Engineer, Substations to progress designs through all project stages.
The Senior Engineer, Substations needs to work closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Registration as a P. Eng with APEGA
  • 8+ years working in an electric engineering environment, with extensive experience in design and cost estimating and project management of utility-specific substation design experience.
  • Understanding of substation design and studies required for Windfarms, Solar Farms and BESS solutions would be a benefit.
  • Familiarity with protection and control, maintenance, and operational practices is considered an asset.

SKILLS

  • Advanced experience in managing a program of work, inclusive of managing multiple proposals, estimates, and designs at the same time.
  • Ability to provide engineering support for the full project lifecycle.
  • Subject matter expert in high voltage design and construction including applicable electrical codes, standards, and specifications.

  • Strong coaching and professional development skills required to build capacity within a growing team.

Responsibilities
  • Work with Internal stakeholders to ensure understanding and alignment of plans and goals.
  • Identify and communicate the needs of the Substation Engineering group.
  • Supports and monitors engineering best practices and standards.
  • Manage the Substation Engineering program of work.
  • Oversee and continuously improve the engineering design development processes.
  • Mentor and assist in the growth the Substation Engineering group. Create an environment that foster the career development of engineers and technologists within the team.
  • Provide technical expertise and support professional development within the group.
  • Support Management of engineering scopes being performed by third party partners.
  • Prepares, modifies, and delivers job descriptions and performance evaluations to direct reports.
  • Oversee the reporting of KPI’s such as utilization, profitability, and backlog.
  • Develops short and long-term staffing plan in conjunction with operational managers.
  • Supports business development by attending client meetings as required. Work with current clients to obtain repeat business.
  • Supports proposal development as required and ensure all operational proposal responses are provided in a timely manner.
  • Mentors, coaches and trains team members within the substation design group
  • Provide oversite and checking of the entire substation design package including apparatus, P&C and SCADA
  • Monitors design budgets and supports project managers in defending engineering scope changes to clients
  • Ensuring every team member gets home safely.
  • Ensuring that the engineering group is operating at full potential.
  • Maintaining relationships with customers, consultants, and design approvers.
