You are passionate about innovative team culture and engineering excellence We are high performing engineers pushing the boundaries of software engineering Together we can lead the future of engineering! Do work that matters Business Banking (BB) Technology is on a mission to become Australia’s leading digital business bank. We partner closely with our business colleagues to solve real customer problems through technical innovation and empowered teams. See Yourself in Our Team At CommBank, we’re not just building software we’re transforming how Australia banks. As a Senior Engineering Manager you’ll be at the forefront of our AI Powered Engineering strategy, driving technical excellence, uplifting capability, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation. In this role You’ll lead the Engineering & Cloud Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Everyday Business Banking on its mission to enable and accelerate engineering excellence across the domain. In partnership with your Executive Manager, and leading a team of 7 engineers, you will enable your team to support 75 delivery squads and 400+ engineers across the domain. The CoE’s mandate is twofold: Ensure squads have effective, scalable cloud and environment foundations. Continuously embed and scale enterprise engineering practices, tooling, and capability across EBB — enabling fast, secure, reliable, and cost-efficient delivery at scale. Your team already plays a well-established role in cloud and environment effectiveness. You will build on this foundation and broaden the scope to drive uplift across DevSecOps, modern testing practices, cyber security, service management, resilience and observability, microservice best practices, AI-powered engineering, and developer experience. The CoE will also lead the evolution of our engineering metrics capability — tracking maturity, identifying gaps, and enabling targeted uplift across squads. Importantly, your team will act as a bi-directional bridge with CBA’s central technology teams — partnering to ensure enterprise platforms and tooling effectively support the needs of EBB squads. Key Responsibilities Cloud & Environment Enablement Maintain and enhance cloud and environment governance and effectiveness. Improve environment provisioning, scalability, cost transparency, and operational resilience. Ensure squads have frictionless access to fit-for-purpose engineering environments. Engineering Uplift Develop and execute structured adoption roadmaps of enterprise engineering standards, tooling, and practices across EBB squads. Sequence initiatives, plan capacity, and manage multiple concurrent streams of work. Drive measurable improvement in engineering maturity, security posture, reliability, and delivery effectiveness. Metrics & Continuous Improvement Mature our engineering metrics framework to provide clear visibility of progress and risk. Use insights to prioritise targeted interventions and capability uplift. Track outcomes and communicate impact to stakeholders. High-Performing Team Leadership Attract, retain, and develop high-calibre engineering talent. Create structured opportunities for learning, collaboration, and mastery — particularly in emerging areas such as AI-powered engineering. Foster a culture of psychological safety, autonomy, ownership, and continuous improvement. Enterprise Influence & Partnership Translate broader technology strategy and OKRs into clear, actionable priorities for your team. Build strong relationships across EBB and with central technology teams, ensuring central tooling and platform offerings are refined to meet domain needs. Actively source feedback from squads and adapt the CoE’s focus accordingly. Operational Excellence Ensure agile delivery within the CoE — incremental outcomes, fast feedback loops, and iterative refinement. Provide timely, effective CoE expertise when squads need support. Surface innovative thinking from within our domain and help bring it to life. We are interested in people who have Proven experience leading high-performing engineering teams in complex, multi-squad environments. Deep technical expertise and broad knowledge across modern software engineering, cloud platforms, DevSecOps, and AI-enhanced workflows. Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle in fast-paced, regulated environments. Passion for uplifting engineering capability, driving engagement, and simplifying developer experience. Ability to operate strategically while executing pragmatically. Exceptional planning, prioritisation, and communication capability. Demonstrated ability to articulate complex technical strategy clearly. Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing capability.
