Salmon species listed under the State and federal endangered species acts are at all time low abundances. However, many exciting new monitoring and science efforts are being launched as a part of multi-agency collaborations to improve our understanding of their life history, stresses, and effectiveness of new and ongoing minimization and mitigation actions. This position offers a unique opportunity for someone with strong leadership skills and a background in Central Valley salmon biology to lead a team of fisheries biologists dedicated to endangered species protection within the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. They will oversee implementation of and compliance with the federal and State endangered species take authorizations for the Central Valley Project (CVP) and State Water Project (SWP), as well as the Delta Conveyance Project (DCP). They will collaborate with State, federal, academic, and private sector colleagues to implement and review the scientific and administrative aspects of water project operations, covered species monitoring, scientific study, and mitigation, as well as develop new approaches for monitoring, minimizing, and mitigating water project impacts on winter-run and spring-run Chinook salmon.
The mission of the State Water Project Permitting Unit is to develop and implement novel, science-based solutions to conflicts between water supply and ecosystem management in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and tributaries. We will consistently provide clear, creative, and feasible solutions to conserve and adaptively manage imperiled species and ecosystems impacted by joint operations of the State and federal water projects. We will do this by developing our own scientific expertise and encouraging outside-the-box thinking in a collaborative, open, respectful, and candid setting.
