EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.

EXPERIENCE

  • Three (3) years highly successful experience in family and community outreach as a bilingual facilitator required; and
  • Two (2) years successful experience leading professional development for the bilingual facilitator team. required; and
  • Experience with regular engagements of ELL families through workshops and activities. required; and
  • Experience with developing effective communication mechanism for two-way communication with families. required.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Ability to remain current with the latest information and research on the involvement of language minority families in the education of their children.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, teachers, administrators, fellow employees and parents.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Simultaneous Interpreting skills to support the needs of AACPS for simultaneous interpretaion at system wide events.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.).

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bilingual/Biliterate In English and a second language (all skills) native or near native preferred.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists schools with creating a welcoming environment for language minority families and communicating with them in a meaningful way about academic programs, services, and their children’s progress.
  • Maintains connections with community stakeholders and provides information to language minority families about the availability and use of these community resources.
  • Facilitates communication between school staff and families; supports school registrations, periodic home-visits regarding attendance, emergency family needs and crisis situations, informs school and/or community agencies of the needs and concerns of language minority families, interpreters for school event and conferences, and translates school based documents.
  • Stays current with the latest information and research on the involvement of language minority families in the education of their children; attends and actively participates in staff development activities in Central Office and assigned schools when required
  • Collaborates with Office of School & Family Partnerships to provide support of their programs and initiatives in order to ensure equal access for language minority families.
  • Assists with providing professional development to AACPS staff regarding language support and services, as well as best practices for working with international families.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selecting of prospective bilingual facilitators and interns.
  • Supports the development of bilingual facilitators; mentor and coach novice bilingual facilitators and supports goal setting with experienced bilingual facilitators and collaborates to help them reach goals.
  • Observes programs for family engagement, collects data, and provides coaching to expand family engagement and support for families.
  • Supports translation and interpretation of county wide AACPS communications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Based on assignment, provides direct support to the Manager of International Family Outreach Programs by assisting with hiring, onboarding, staffing, and advancing departmental functions and initiatives.
  • Based on assignment, ensures year-round continuity of support for language minority families by maintaining strong connections between home, school, and community, especially during summer months.
  • Based on assignment, supports school readiness by assisting with summer enrollments, guiding families through school registration and orientation processes, and helping them access key resources such as the Parent Portal and FARMS applications.
  • Based on assignment, designs, implements, and evaluates systems and events that promote academic success for English Learner (ELL) students, including support for families of students in AACPS summer programs and preparing families for the new school year.
