Sola Engineering Inc. provides geotechnical engineering services in the Greater Toronto Area. We are a growing, thriving company, driven by the knowledge, hard work, and dedication of our staff.
The primary objective of this role is for the incumbent to act as a Senior Field Technician to contribute to project work, promote technical excellence within the company, and ensure compliance with Sola’s policies and practices on technical matters.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) certification is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering from a reputable institution is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on field experience in geotechnical engineering construction and materials testing within the Toronto or Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is mandatory.
  • Proven experience in field inspection and laboratory testing for geotechnical and materials engineering.
  • Experience with environmental consulting, concrete technology, and building science is an asset but not required.
  • Experience with both new construction and restoration projects is highly desirable.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in confined or tight spaces.
  • Well organized, with excellent time management skills to handle multiple assignments, meeting deadlines and budgets.
  • Strong report writing and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Committed to upholding technical excellence and company standards.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with field data entry tools is an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Follow and observe Sola’s Employee Handbook, IT and General Security Policy, and other manuals, procedures, and policies (collectively “Sola Policies”).
  • Work within Sola’s Services department and report directly to the Soils Engineer.
  • Supervise geotechnical construction works on site, including proof rolling inspection, footing and rebar inspections, and ensuring compliance with project drawings and geotechnical reports.
  • Take charge of field supervision activities, providing leadership and guidance to junior technicians and field staff, including training and mentoring.
  • Perform detailed field observations and inspections, including soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement (not all disciplines may be present on every project).
  • Review and interpret geotechnical reports, project drawings, and specifications to ensure accurate field implementation and compliance.
  • Write clear, detailed field reports with actual measurements, observations, and documented discrepancies. Immediately communicate any issues or discrepancies to the appropriate personnel to facilitate timely resolution.
  • Assist in preparing client reports related to site investigations, field inspections, and construction advice.
  • Assist in preparing proposals for geotechnical investigations and environmental studies, ensuring timely submission aligned with company policies on content, pricing, and risk assessment.
  • Provide technical advice and support to management and operating departments regarding field activities and site conditions.
  • Ensure projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Develop and promote technical solutions and options to meet client needs.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and follow-up with clients to ensure satisfaction and delivery against commitments.
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of other professional and technical staff on projects.
  • Manage geotechnical projects including organizing fieldwork, obtaining service clearances, mobilizing drill rigs, laying out boreholes, establishing grade elevations, and overseeing sampling and monitoring (e.g., groundwater levels in piezometers).
  • Perform or oversee routine field and laboratory tests under the direction of senior staff, including:
  • Soils: in-place density testing (nuclear gauge, sand cone), Proctor compaction, Atterberg limits, sieve analysis.
  • Aggregates: sampling and sieve analysis.
  • Concrete/Grout/Masonry: sampling, air content, slump, compressive and flexural strength tests, mortar/grout testing, core sampling.
  • Asphalt: sampling, hot mix asphalt testing, nuclear density gauge and coring, solvent extraction.
  • Support laboratory activities including calibration and maintenance of equipment, organization and cleanliness, data calculation and reduction, and record keeping.
  • Assist with other administrative tasks as required.
